I'm in the process of getting my kit together for my cinema room. I have 2 projectors on my short list, the Optoma HD82 and the Sony VPL - HW10. Here in South Africa the Sony is 25% cheaper than the Optoma. I have demod both and didn't notice a difference, the demos were done at my local sound shop. Am i missing something or is the obvious choice the cheaper machine?

If you can't see a difference, go with the cheaper one. The only other things to take into account is whether or not you see the rainbow effect on the Optoma, how the two compare regarding noise levels, and which one may be better for your room in terms of overall brightness and throw distance, and how well they'll work with your ambient light, which may differ from the place you tried them in.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the rainbow effect? I'm still new to projectors.

The Sony is only cheaper here in South Africa, other pricelists(USA) list them as the same price. Also list same price as the Panasonic PTA3000. I realize same price doesn't always mean same quality.
