Optical input problem - only 1 speaker working

Hi,

Was hoping someone could help. I've just bought a Marantz PM6005 amp and am trying to connect the tv to it via the optical input. Problem is it's only playing through 1 channel.

I've checked the tv and cable box outputs and it's the same on both. Plus it's the same for every input on the tv (laptop, Nintendo, TV, DVD player) All other inputs I've tried play both speakers fine (although I haven't checked the coaxial).

Does this sound like a faulty optical cable (apparently they're quite sensitive) or am I missing something simple? I've been reading about configuring the output to PCM in the TV settings but can't find anything relating to that in either the TV or cable box settings.

I'll be changing the cable tomorrow but just thought I'd check beforehand as Maplins is quite a trek...

Thanks

An optical cable is just that; light...

An interconnect is cable and if damaged can alter/interrupt the sound but never heard the same issue with an optical cable...

I would have thought if damaged it just wouldn't let the sound travel

Hqve you ensured It's fully in and clicked/locked into place?

They do lock in with a 'click'

An optical cable streams digital data therefore it either works or it doesn’t. (It cannot alter the sound or operation in any way)

I suspect it is a setting somewhere or possibly a fault in the 6005.

Hope this helps

The left channel and right channel data is interleaved on a S/PDIF optical link. It would not be possible for the left data to make it through, but the right data to be blocked in some way. As the amp works OK for other inputs, it isn't the speaker connections or the power amp section of your amp.

It does sound as if the amp has a fault with internal switching or its internal DAC. I would suggest you return the amp.

Thanks all.

I guess it'll be pretty futile changing the lead then. I was hoping it wouldn't be the amp but it seems it must be. At least it's new and under warrenty though I guess.

Thanks again for your help.
