optical help

hi,can anybody help.i have never used optical leads and decided to try it out and connected a optical cable from my primare dvd 26 to an external dac(marantz hd dac 1)to see the results and i am not getting any signal.unblocked is coming up on the marantz display(which means in the manual that no signal is received)i also connected the same cable to a teac ud h01 dac and am having the same results.

when i unplug the cable from the dacs there is light coming from the cable end,so i assumed that that was a signal.can anyone help.the rca analog cables are connected and the amp is getting a signal and is outputting to the speakers.is the fact that the rca is outputting and can only output on one output?...

It might be that the DAC(s) can't decode the digital signal. What are you playing through the DVD player? Is there a setting on the DVD player to set output format to PCM?

You may have to set audio to "optical out" within the menu of the primare.

shows how to enable or disable the digital outputs, you may have this set to off.
