Emotiva smashes the 7.2.4 Atmos/DTS:X barrier with its new 16-channel AV pre/pro, the RMC-1 ($4999). The is the company’s “no holds barred” flagship and will debut at CES 2017 and offers 7.3.6-channel immersive audio capability.

The RMC-1 promises support for the very latest video formats including 4K UHD with HDR (HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2) plus the ergonomic benefit of high-speed video switching.

The star of the show here is the RMC-1’s 16 channels of audio might. All channels are fully balanced and fed by 32-bit AD/DA converters. The unit handles both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersive surround formats with speaker configurations up to 7.3.6 channels. Every single channel gets its own Verita 32-bit DAC, which operates in “precision balanced mono” mode. This unit can even decode single and double-rate DSD audio from either HDMI or USB sources.

Room correction is provided by Dirac live, and runs on all 16 channels with a 192 kHz sample rate. This feature alone makes the RMC-1 a dream machine for obsessive AV enthusiasts seeking the best possible sound quality out of their system.
Fans of two channel audio are not forgotten thanks to the inclusion of a Reference Stereo mode.
This is about as exciting as it gets in the world of pre/pros. Capabilities such as these have previously only been available in stratospherically priced processors from the likes of Trinnov and Datasat. But, true to a Emotiva form, the RMC-1 promises to deliver all this at a price point that—while still high compared to some mainstream manufacturers offerings—is approachable. With CES just 10 days away, I can’t wait to check it out.
