I've had the above setup since Christmas and am struggling to get the sound of my system that I would like - it's my first 5.1 system and I'm want0 to get the most of my new tech!

I bought the system on advice of the guys in Richer Sounds as I wanted something that would be equally as good with music as it would be with film - the system I have bought was billed as something that would come close to this, on my budget.

I have to say in many respects I am pleased, with Sky HD/SD broadcasts and with blu-ray the system performs well, but there is a real lack of mid-range sound when playing music (currently input via HDMI from my net-top PC0. I am using Apple Lossless files or CD wherever possible and am finding it hard to work out what to adjust to get the sound I want.

Does anyone have any advice?

There is only so much you can 'adjust' to obtain a satisfactory cd playback, or in your case through your set-up.

The AVR amp is optimised for movies, and unless you go down the route of obtaining a separate stereo amp for music, you are unlikely to derive any better results.

That is the compromise, unfortunately.
