im wanting to buy the Onkyo TX-SR606 due to the impressive reviews but was just wondering about the upscaling capabilities. i will be using a blu ray player for dvds and a 360 through hdmi so no problem there but was just wondering if you could connect a sky + box to the onkyo and would it upscale the picture and make it any better, or wouldnt it make a difference? if this is possible how would you do it?

cheers jonny

You could and yes it would, but you'll need an RGB-to-component converter between the Sky+ box and the receiver.

Converter box about £60-£100, or you could just use the S-video output on the Sky+. Results may be unpredictable - I've heard some reports of shaky pictures via these converters and upscaling.

No, the 875 probably wouldn't give a better picture, due to the limitations mentioned in the previous paragraph.

do you mean the s video would give shakey pictures or the component would too? the converters ive just had a look at are Y U V is this what youd run into the onkyo would it be compatable? and would the picture then run through the hdmi out cable to the tv with everything else.

doing it this way as well what would the sound be like, would it be better to use a optical audio cable?

As I said, I've seern reports of some shaky picture problems when using this type of converter, You should have no such problems with the S-video, but then it will be of lower quality.

Yes, you need a converter that goes from RGB to YUV. Yes, then the picture would run out through a single HDMI, but I still reckon you might bet better off running the RGB Scart straight into the TV and letting the display's onboard scaling do its stuff.

Doing it via the converter you will get no sound at all, and neither will you get sound with the S-video link. Both are video-only connections, so yes you will need the optical link into the receiver.
