Hi

Looking at both options but cant decide which. Also would I be better going with speakers packaged with amp from the same manufacturer or buying from different source i.e Tannoy SFX5.1? I already have a decent pair of Philips 5 x 100w speakers from a previous home cinema system. I was quite happy with quality from those so am curious to know would i see a massive jump in quality with the Tannoys or others in that price bracket? I am not an obsessive audiophile or anything and am limited to a budget of around 500 for amp and speakers or even cheaper if i can get away with old speakers. The system will primarily be used for 5.1 surround from blu ray source. Im not bothered about c.d/audio source playback etc. All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

hi there.the 373 is amazing for the price i have one.they are £200 and the tannoys are ok but for your budget you can aford the tannoy hts101s which are alot better.or wharedale dx1 hcp.these will be a massive jump quality.go to richer sounds

Any reason why you're only considering small satellite speakers? You could buid a nice set up out of Q Acoustic speakers which wouldn't break the bank and can produce a considerably bigger and better sound than the SFX5.1 without being too obtrusive. ;)

just checked richer sounds web site 373 and the wharfedale dx1 £429 wow thats cheep.go for it

haha sorry,im new to this game.havent a clue which is obvious. you reckon that package then?ill have a look.looks around my budget aswell. what do you suggest for a blu ray player?ive read an awful lot of bollix about these. from what ive researched picture quality is dictated by same chipset which comes from same factories regardless of make or model. more expensive models your just paying for extra gimmicks and features which i wont need anyway.

Or to simplify things you could get the Tannoy HTS101 package. Glowing reviews everywhere, even picked the best speaker package for up to £600 here on WHF and it's surely better than the SFX5.1 one. It's just over £300 on Amazon right now. It might not be as good as if you built your own package out of Q Acoustics 2020i and matching centre plus a sub but it's a cheaper and easier alternative. ;)

For 1080p/24 blu ray pictures, I did not notice any difference between blu ray players at different price points. Just go for a basic player from Panasonic or Sony.

Try to demo your options before making a purchase.

yeah your dead right from what ive read online from numerous sources. tests have been conducted from entry level right up to high end models and difference in picture is minute, sometimes slighlty worse on the high end models in the opnion of tester. there will be slight differences between manufacturers naturally enough. the high end models are just charging for extra features(dnr etc)to adjust picture. im happy enough to go with the way the blu ray was intended to look by the people who mastered it.

picture and audio.

1) DVD upscaling, yes there can be a difference. But the newer budget players are much better at it, as shown in recent shoot outs at What Hi Fi. Blu ray playback, no. I haven't found a dirfference between PS3, my Panasonic BD60 and Denon 2500BT.

2) Audio over analogue using better DACs of superior players can make a significant difference, but the OP's system will not be revealing enough to bring out the difference. Over HDMI, you'll struggle to notice any difference.

I'm sorry but I disagree. BD60 , which I owned once, was actually a great palyer at the time, however, now new players offer much more. I was round my friend's couple of weeks ago and he runs a Meridian projector and surround system which he was running from his PS3. Then we changed to Sony BDP-S790 and it was a huge improvement in picture and sound. Even he admitted that it was the best £200 he ever spent.
