Well the title says everything which is best onkyo 875 or denon 2310 and why?

I have at the moment a onkyo 605, but want better detail and more open sound and I like sweet treble, so which is best, can’t get to demo the onkyo 875 its only available online, plus I can get my hands on a refurb 875 not sure if that will be any good.

Ok I will be using Tannoy senseys complete speaker system and kimber 8vs speaker cable biwired.

Does the 875 sound superior to the 605 which I have now?

Any help you guys can give will be great!

Thanks.

I can't comment on the amps sound quality wise. However the Onkyo runs quite hot, keep this in mind if you your rack/cabinet has restricted ventilation.

Tough call but I think I would choose the Onkyo TX-SR875 but again depends in the sound you like. Yamaha, Denon are smoother sounding and not so forceful.

875 is a brute, very powerful and forward.

I used to own the 875 and it is truly a powerhouse of an amp. The Onkyo is very muscular yet agile and will thrill you with it's explosive presentation - if that's what you're looking for.

I doubt the 2310 has the same clout but maybe a more refined and smoother presentation - I've listened to this by chance one day and would choose the Onkyo any day. It suits my taste better.

I moved from a Denon 2803 to the Onkyo 875 and the sound difference was huge. The 875 is

more muscular and up front. Don't know what the 2310 is like but I would guess it's quite 'laid back'

in comparison to the 875.

Only real way to choose is back to back comparison if at all possible.

I overcame the heat problem by placing a 22cm PC case fan on top - works a treat with the slightly

restricted headspace of my Optimum AV rack.

Cheers guys for all your comments, I just decided on the denon, only reason is that I need to buy a new stand for the 875 due to limited height for the amp, but now thinking twice about the denon.

I have the onkyo 605 now and I like it, I want more detailed treble more forceful midrange, guess by the comments the 875 is the way to go, plus I can get my hands on the 905 if that's any better but a extra £200, don't know if that's worth it.

Anybody seen or own a onkyo refurb unit as I just came across a onkyo 875 for £449 and that's pretty good and if anybody as are they in good condition or should I just stay away.

Thanks again.

p.s this may sound stupid, but how do I post comments in this forum without pressing reply, quick reply, etc, on the bottom of the posts, I can't find no "post comment button" cheers.

I have the 605 and I love it but the 875 is a far superior amp. I would go with the 875 over the 2310.

Originally I had an Onkyo 606, and then last year, demo'd the 607, Denon 1910 and 2310.....

The Denon 2310 was far superior to the other two, in my opinion.....

As for the onkyo 875: well, I have heard them before but never in a demo when comparing one after the other (A-B comparison), but the Denon 2310 is very musical and refined compared to the lesser onkyo receivers mentioned above (606,607).

I use it with my CDP too, and the Denon 2310 shines with 2 channel stereo playback, when compared to the onkyo's, and even the 1910.....

Agreed. The 2310 is definitely a class up on the amps you mentioned, but against the 875, it's quite a different story. That will be down to preference mainly.

Thanks ValianTX and pistol pete1, I think I am more confused then ever, I can't get a demo of the onkyo 875 so that's the problem, like you say "pistol pete1" the denon is more refined compared to my 606, 607, and mine 605.

But there again I want more powerful sound not in volume in the sound stage, like you say ValianTX the 875 is a better amp then the 605 which I like so it can only be better.

I wish I could test the denon on my Tannoy senseys speakers, I know if I play music on my 605 it can sound a little cold, but I only play music about one hour a week max, so really the best for cinema sound is the one I want, because I have not heard that many amps on my Tannoy speakers I have no clue which way they will swing.

If there are any What HiFi editors reading please give me your advice as you have heard the onkyo 875 and the denon 2310 in the same testing room so your comments will be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

if the Sony 3500es is like my 3400, it will give you the powerful sound you are after.

Hi There,

I've never heard the 2310 so I cannot comment on it, but I moved from a Denon 3802 to an Onkyo 905 and it absolutely unequivocally blew the socks off the Denon and the Onkyo 605.

My only criticism is that while it isn't bad with music, it can be quite fatiguing over long periods of time. But for films...I wouldn't change a thing.

Can't comment on the Denons, but I will say my 875 isn't going anywhere until it goes to the big recycling centre in the sky. Awesome amp.

Well, if it cheers you up, my Laguna (with only 75000 on the clock) just destroyed its gear box and that has cost considerably more that the £400 I saved on the 875....

I wouldn't wish any additional expense on anyone. Sorry to hear about your car. Even when they're running perfectly they cost you money (Spent £400 this month myself. Full service, plus a pair of new Goodyear Wrangler 235 70 R16s

Chris you are a good chap, no schadenfreude for you. I am driving it to the alps on Friday - at least it didn't fail on a French motorway.

Thanks mate and everyone, well I have decided, if I like my 605 then I am getting the onkyo 875, will be getting it next week.

For the denon it may be a great amp, but it being on the warm side may not be for me so 875 all the way.

Cheers to everyone this is a great forum.

Thanks!
