Onkyo 875 - Firmware upgrade

I heard about the onkyo firmware upgrade problems a while back, but finally decided to phone Onkyo myself today. I am currently running firmware 1.02 (hold display and press the power button to check), they have told me they are now installing firmware 1.07 which fixes some lip sync issues (mainly with Sky) some video processing issues and a problem with DTS HD audio. I haven't really noticed any problems, except the Sky lip sync but I had that on my previous receiver. But as I have not tested it yet with DTS HD thought maybe I should get it done. They are collecting it next Tuesday so I will be without a receiver for around 7 days. Has anyone had any isues with the 875 or had their Firmware upgraded?

I read about this in another magazine yesterday and was going to make a post. Apparently, some DTS HD MA soundtracks on discs can cause an extremely loud bang (potenitally blowing speakers) at certain points during the film. The problem is down to a first generation DTS decoder chip used in early Yamaha and Onkyo models (Pioneer and Denon have always used a different supplier so this doesn't afffect them). As you say Onkyo have created a firmware patch for this problem for all their models. If you have an Onkyo receiver bought during 2007, you are advised to get the latest firmware by contacting Onkyo and apply it to make sure you don't get this problem.

Yamaha have said the only two models to be affected by this are the RXV-1800 and RXV-3800 - if you have one of these, contact Yamaha with your serial number to find out of you could be affected.

The list of DTS HD MA discs this has been reported to have been a problem with is 1408, Golden Compass, The Fly, Fantastic Four, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Master and Commander, Flight of the Phoenix and Flyboys. Apparently some HD-DVD titles are also affected.

I read the same article but I'm getting the firmware update sent in the post to me. I'm not sure why they've said they'll take your amp away for 7 days??

They said they had to remove a component to install the new firmware. Although they did ask what version I already had, so maybe later versions can be updated via the post method. What Firmware do you have at the moment?
Version 1.02. Did you speak to Genserve or Onkyo?
Both - Onkyo gave me the number for Genserve, Genserve told me it needed to be done by them. They are sending a courier for it next Tuesday.
What format are you getting the upgrade on?

I'm not sure. The lady I spoke to said that they'd send the update to me and instructions of how to install it. I thought it would be either cd or dvd??

I'm hoping it doesn't mess with all of my settings once it's installed. If yours is going away I imagine it will come back with factory settings!!

Onkyo 875 and 905's that shipped with Firmware 1.05 (I think) have had a hardware modification already done. Receivers with earlier firmware need the hardware modification doing as well as the software.

I had to send my 905 off for the same reason.

@rse. I'll get in touch with them again tomorrow and see what they say. Will post back with some clarity. Hopefully

According to the article, "the update can be uploaded to an affected AV receiver using the digital output of a CD player" in case anyone was wondering. Though obviously if Onkyo tell you you have to send back your receiver, they're probably right!!

Spoke to Genserve this morning. The receiver needs to go back to have 2 caps removed before the firmware can be installed. How irritating.

So the day after I'm told that the amp needs to go away for this "firmware" update the display on it stops working. The only thing that I've done recently to it that I can think of that would make it do this is pressing the display button together with the power button to get it to show the firmware version. Strange. and annoying.

Could be worse. Could have gone wrong the day after it comes back from the upgrade. At least they can deal with it at the same time.

Having an issue with judder and upscaling on my Onkyo 875-said I'd try updating the firmware from 1.05 to 1.07 to see if it help-Genserve are sending out the firmware upgrade to me because I have 1.05 already-anything before this needs a hardware mod to update I believe.

Checked my 905 today firmware 1.05 telephoned Genserve (thanks to the thread) 2 upgrades for the 905 One by cd optical mentioned in the thread and the 2nd by computer if you have IT skill im a novice. But its good to have family. So i dont need to send the 905 they send the upgrades to me to install. When complete the firmware should be 1.08 hope this helps.

You will need a serial cable to go from the PC to the 905, readily available from a shop like Maplin. The actual process is very easy (if a little scary as you could brick the unit ;-) ). I did my own and it worked fine, just make sure you read the instructions thoroughly. The CD player bit requires a basic CD player. My Rega Apollo didn't work but the cheapo Sony CD changer I had stored away worked fine. The PS3 works apparently as well but you have to have the correct settings for the optical output.
