Onkyo 808 Issues???

I was looking for an upgrade to my Onkyo 606 and after listening to the 808 decided to buy it to get the best from my B&W 684 theatre package; overall i am very pleased with my purchase but have noticed a niggle or 2 when it comes to recognising HDMI inputs.

I have my Panasonic DMP BD85 attached via QED HDMI, and the same goes for my Xbox 360 and Playstation 3; I noticed the other day that the sound on the XBox dropped out and it looked like the reciever did not pick up the HDMI signal correctly. After turning everything off and back on again (can you tell i work in IT?) everything worked fine.

Sadly last night when trying to watch a movie via the bluray player the reciever did not recognise a connection and would not play any sound, i turned everything off and on again several times with no joy. Finally i powered down the reciever via the power button (instead of using the power button on the remote) and all worked fine.

Is this simply a case of making sure i turn the reciever on before anything else? a matter of compatability issues or the sign of a faulty receiever?

Any help is much appreciated.

Sounds like a fault. I can turn on my amp or any of my sources, in any order I like without issue.

Can you try a different HDMI cable? Do you have any other sources connected (Sky, Virgin, etc.)? Does it do the same thing with these sources?

Possibly just a 'handshake' issue?

If so, change the input on the amp (lets say you want it on dvd, then select cd or whatever), then back again

Thanks both for your replies.

I do have a cable box attached but not through HDMI as i very rarely watch any "Normal" TV my equipment is used 99% of the time for watching bluray/DVD movies and gaming.

I had a similar thing happen with my old 606 where if i turned the amp on after say the Xbox for example the xbox would not be output in DD just all channel stereo.

I also suspect a handshake issue as it has only happened once or twice but when it recognises the HDMI i do get good solid sound without any cutting out or interuption.

Is there anything that can be done to correct a handshake issue or is it all down to hoping the firmware is updated?

Gavin,

Besides your HDMI issues (do you think this is anything to do with you having 1.3b HDMI leads on a 1.4 machine by the way?) how does you 808 sound? what did you replace AV receiver wise?

Just asking as I'm in the hunt to replace my Yamaha RXV-1065 with something newer, that allows Iphone connection via USB, is a little more powerful, and has 1.4HDMI so i don't have upgrade again.

I have the 808 on a shortlist with the Pioneer 1020 or 2020 and denon 2311.

Also I would ne interested to know wether it runs hot, I previously had an 876 and had lots of problems in my AV Cabinet due to heat build up.

Your feed back would be appreciated.

Sound wise it is awesome, I upgraded from the 606 model; the HDMI issue is very rare and does not affect the sound when the reciever has established the connection. Its just more of a faff than anything when i have to turn off the xbox or bluray player off then turn them back on to re-establish a link - again in the rare instances of it happening its no hardship.

Regarding heat i have not really measured but have not noticed any excessive heat; will check later when at home and update you on that side of things.

Obviously as anyone would recommend have a listen to all that you have shortlisted and see which works for you, i was trying out the B&W 684 speakers at the same time as testing recievers and felt that the sound delivered was a huge improvement over the 606 with B&W 685 speakers.

Also even though i am more inot my movies than i am music when plugging an ipod via usb or even streaming music from my laptop the sound quality (to my ears) is amazing.

Hope this helps

Gavin,

Thanks for that, I will try to get a demo tomorrow of course, I will be using it mainly for blu ray movies, and gaming as I have just added a new xbox360 to my system.

I have only just recently got into the Iphone/ipod thing so as long as I can plug it in and it will play, I am sure it will sound good to me (audiophiles everywhere have justed choked reading that statement).

Thx again.

I have had the reciever on for a while this evening while playing about with music etc and there is not a huge amount of heat that i can detect coming from the reciever.

I am new to the ipod thing also (sorry Apple fans) as i only bought it for working out and i am happy to report it plugs into the reciever with no hassle what so ever so you dont have to worry about that side of things.

Gaming wise when playing something like Modern Warfare 2 on my 360 the sounds are very authorative and you can hear every explosiong and chopper overhead in great detail. Put something like Alan Wake on and it makes the game all the more scary (I am a big wuss) and atmospheric.

Again hope this info helps.
