I know the 875 has upscaling vs the 805's upconversion and the 875 has a bit more power

but

does the 875 sound any better than the 805 in any way?

(im after a black one and the 875 is £160 more than the 805)

Thanks

Dont bother with either of the onkyos the 875 is buggy as hell and has been since it got launched you'd be better of with something like a yamaha RXV 1800 or 3800 some shops are doing some good offers on these at the mo and they are loads better.

what features did u need from ur amp?

ah

see i was looking at the 606 and with the deals everyone else says to get an 875?

I want to upgrade from a yamaha 757. im after something that can handle HD audio (from my ps3) and an upgrade in quality. Its going to be running the manitor audio r90-av12 pack.

i do lean toward the 3800 coz thats what ive got and after listening to about everything at that sort of price its what i decided on.

the 1800 would do you fine for the speakers you have.

its hard to knock the 606 coz for £375 (or however much it is) its a bargin and doesnt even have any competitors. find a shop that sells both the yamaha and onkyo, ask them to put a good action scene on a bluray (tunnel scene in die hard 4 and scene 28 on batman begins kick ass) listen to the onkyo first then the yamaha. it'll be no brainer

I have the 875 and have experienced no bugs whatsoever. Any new ones will come with up to date firmware anyway so all this nonsense about it being "buggy" is a red herring...

I'd just suggest you audtion a few receivers without prejudice and choose one that does everything you need it to, sounds the best to you and is within your budget...

this is too true dont spend £800 plus based on what anybody on a forum says *blasphemy warning* dont even spend it based on what the mags say pick a few you like the sound of and you local dealer will help you with the rest

Ah yes - those famous 875 bugs you hear about all the time... Every week you see someone come on here and post that their displays and/or front channels are dying... Forum's clogged up with 'em...

Or not.

Possibly one of the most sweeping statement with no founding I've ever read on this site. All I've heard from the people who own 875's on here is nothing but good, apart from them running a bit hot.

Too right, there are always the odd prob with near enough any machine but I havent heard that the '875' is any worse than any other out there. It doubles as a radiator in winter too.

ask a retailer who sells all the big brands for his honest opnion he'll tell you how bad they are.

875 and 805 are discontinued now anyway with the new ones due any time soon it it might be best to wait for them to get into stores before buying anything

What a ridiculous comment... What do you think I did before I bought my 875 (and presumably thousands of others who bought theirs)?

depends how you worded the question did you say "what do you think of the onkyo 875" or did you say "ive got a grand to spend on an amp, whats the best one?"

i think one of the most important things to remember is how many of these Onkyo have sold - they were a virtually unknown manufacture 10 years ago and last year i'm sure had the biggest selling amps across the £400, £1000 and £1400 marks - the sheer number of these sold means there are some that will go wrong - prob due to customer miss use as much as anything ie these run hot and need room to breath - nothings perfect. I have an 875 and never had any issues touch wood - if goes wrong will contact dealer its covered for 3 years will be collected, ,fixed and returned for free - no issue. Find yourself an 875 for £600 quid and buy it you won't regret it.

Sorry mate, but your statement about Onkyo's being buggy as hell is wrong, plain and simple. If you're going to offer opinion, that's fine, but saying something like that with absolutely no facts to back it up is just misleading and completely non-helpful.

Wow - two people out of probably tens of thousands who have bought the units in the UK alone - astonishing evidence! I knew two people who went skiing (at different times) and both broke their arms. Therefore I would advise anyone from going skiing as clearly you will break your arm.
Please!

must of been something wrong with them onkyo recalled aload about 6 month ago because of problems with the scaling and other stuff and your right skiing is really dangerous i wouldnt go. which arm did they break? was it on the same mountin? maybe its the mountin that is faulty.

I agree that the Onkyos are buggy......because they make you bug eyed the first time you lay your eyes on them, the Gold models especially! :)

Funny that! Thats just what i did around around 9 months ago and my dealer pointed to the big onk. He also sells denon and yamaha! and after listening to all three i found the onkyo the most agreeable.

The 805 and 875 sound pretty much the same. The 875 adds the higher-quality video processing, one extra HDMI input (4 in total) and the opportunity to pair amp channels in bridged mode to give greatly increased power for the front channels in a 5.1 system, as well as the biamp configuration the 805 also offers.
