On the subject of LG, what do the model numbers signify?

Having bought the 42LG5020 from Richer Sounds last month, I can't help but notice that the 42LG5000 and 42LG5010 seem to be totally identical.

The best prices I've seen for the 5000, 5010 and 5020 have dropped in the last couple of weeks to £615, £580 and £620 (all below the £699 price at Richers, where it's disappeared from the on-line shop), but if they are all the same, why make the distinction?

Is it simply to make pricematching harder or is there some other purpose? Or are they subtley different and I've not noticed?

Manufacturers such as LG and Samsung, among others, often produce slightly different model numbers for different retailers which can be confusing.

Although they often claim the tech specs are identical, we never take this on trust and always insist on testing each model separately. The specs of the 42LG5000/5010/5020 may be the same, but don't assume so.

But seriously, it's just as Andy says - manufacturers are increasingly putting out sets with subtlely different model numbers so retailers can claim to stock an 'exclusive' set. Sometimes these are identical, sometimes (as our testing has shown) not.

LG's website allows you to compare models, and when you do that the LG5000 and LG5010 models appear identical. The '20 isn't even mentioned....

Certainly not, you're far better informed, which is why I asked here rather than there 🙂

I was wondering if there was a generic "they do them without stands for Dixons" and "with panels with a lower spec panel for Richer sounds" but it seems like there isn't

Either way, despite the price of the 50xx dropping so quick, I'm happy as I'm delighted with the set. Shame the Teac DRH300DAB that's acting as DVD source isn't doing as well as it could
