I have a CD player that is 15 years old and was pretty low end at the time.

I am slowly building my Hi-Fi system, have an NAD amp, Paradigm speakers, SVS sub, up next...

I mostly stream music via Apple TV or play CD's, I would like to set up an Networked Server and download all my music and get off Itunes lossless (for a number or reasons). I don't have a ton of money so I need to do this wisely, econiomically, and one piece at a time.

My question, If I purchase the Pioneer N-50 streamer, keep my old CD, connect it to the Pioneer via an optical cable, would I get a quality end product? My simple understanding is that the CD player will just be passing a digital signal and all the music characteristics will be coming from the Pioneer N-50.

Am I missing something

On the Apple TV, my kids load their MP3's in Itunes which clutters up my stuff and I don't like having to turn on the computer to be able to access it.

Thanks for the response on the other front.
