Ok just got a NAD 514 CD Player and Technics SL-PS70 sounds waaaaaay better. Bye Bye NAD I am getting a new laser for the Technics. The Technics is quicker loading and resolves issues quicker.
Technics players were always better at reading scratched discs and dealing with errors, but their quality was never up there with the best, although they were very good.
Whether a CD player is better than another one relies on many things, but age isn't one of them - as long as laser mechs are still available, of course...
I agree - I just bought a NOS JVC XV-D9000J with k2 that sounds better than anything ive ever heard. But then it cost EUR 5000 when launched - I think the power supply, shielding/vibration control plays a key role in why high end vintage sounds so good.
To reduce costs, it is better to use cheap and poor materials and make people believe the more bits and khz the better the sound. The output is often the weakest link. Put tubes in your cdp for example and see ( hear ) what happens.
