i just brought a belkin router n series with usb atachment for hard drive when i hooked it up all lights came on apart from the internet light all my pcs could c the router so i called sky for help and thay told me that the router would not work with sky is there a way around this .

Youll need to log into your router and manually input the sky settings needed

I'd say it will work then

Which model of router was it? Belkin make routers for Cable (VirginTelewest/NTL only) and different models for ADSL (BT/Sky/etc)

Both will work fine as a switch on your own network, so all your own devices would see each other, but they may not "see" the internet if they are for the wrong technology.

I think what the OP is saying is they've bought a new router (with wireless N capability) to replace the one supplied by Sky. Am I right?

I did something similar a few months back. Let me tell you - Sky don't make it easy. You need the connection settings from your old router. Unfortunately Sky use custom firmware that hides the page with these details from you. Two of the key pieces of information that you'll need are your ADSL username and password. These are not the same as the username and password that you use to log in to the router. They're the credentials that the router uses to log in to Sky's network. Luckily some clever folks out there on the net have figured out (largely by trial and error I think) that the ADSL password are derived from the MAC address. Have a look at these links:

You'll also need to figure out whether you're connected using G.dmt or ADSL2 DSL modulation. This is basically a trial and error process. I think that most of the other settings are available to copy across from the old router.

Just remember that technically your breaking Sky's terms and conditions by doing this. Your contract says that you're supposed to only ever use the Sky supplied router.ÿ
