noise canciling headphones

any suggestions for some of these to use with ipod on a plane? budget would be about 50 quid???

I think you might be asking a bit much for 50 quid... you might be better off with some isolating ones like the Sennheiser CX series. I used my CX300s on a trip to and from NY in May, and they did the job brilliantly using both my iPod and PSP.

He's not wrong. Cheapest i'd go is the Sennheiser PXC150 pair, which you can pick up for around £55 (they're OK for the money, but don't fold like their superior siblings).

But for that money you could get a seriously good pair of in-ears from, say, Shure - the Award-winning SE110 in-ears are excellent noise-isolators you can buy for bang on your £50 budget....

These work, they wont necessarily provide the best quality sound, but my wife has used them for several cross atlantic trips. They fold down small, and you can even use them without an ipod to get some silence.

hmmmm....seems like i might need to up the budget, anything spring to mind if i can double the budget to 100 notes?

If you're looking for compact/foldable, the Sennheiser PXC300 (list price £130; on sale for as little as £80) is just the job - my set must have been round the world by now...

But if you're looking for a larger pair with more heft, and you can stretch your budget a little more, check out Goldring's NS-1000 - available for around £125. Superb value.

I'd seriously consider the noise isolating ones (like the Shures). Having done a long-haul trip to Australia earlier this year, it isn't the hum of the plane which annoys you, it's the babies crying, children screaming, loud laughing etc. etc. which the noise cancelling phones can do nothing about. The noise isolating ones have also helped me block out all the above on every train journey I've had since!
Unfortunately, neither sets of headphones protect you from air stewards / stewardesses whacking the trolley into your chair

Though the drawback of wearing isolating in-ears on a plane is that you can hear yourself eat/drink - something that makes airline meals even MORE repellent

I know what you mean I wear ear plugs when im riding my motorbike. Sounds very weird if you cough or swallow. It's either that or go deaf from the wind noise. Mind you my exhaust is ermmm quite fruity,it's road legal honest officer. It does help with dozy car drivers and pedestrians as well though, at least they can hear me for a good few minutes before I arrive

I tried some in ear headphones before and couldn't get on with them.

got 2 pairs from amazon for 30 notes, one for me one for the wife.....bargain as there 30 quid a pair in HMV

You beat me to it. CX300s are fine on planes, though obviously I only got to see ten minutes of No Country For Old Men before giving it up as a bad job, with my son next to me pestering for assistance with Super Mario Brothers.

Is probably time for a new pair actually, cf my previous note about wax.......
