it depends on the PC. but not that many TV will not send any audio from external inputs to their digital outs.

Oh I see, tv would output via opticalto amp but not an input to be outputted so to speak!

My TV does, I was showing some friends some youtube clips last night via HDMI from my laptop (Dell). Mind you the laptop doesn't have any other digital output, which might explain it.

I also have a dell, and tried many times to get sound, but have the same problem as OP. If connect the laptop direct to tv before turning the laptop on, then turning the laptop on i have on some very rare occasions had success. Normally i get lots of flickering screen (handshaking?) then a decent picture and no sound.

I have tried connecting through av receiver, and always get a decent picture but no sound.

Have tried variety of hdmi leads, and now given up. Assuming a fault with laptop, but I wouldn;t use it enough to motivate me to sort it out. However, if anyone ha an 'easy' fix.......................................

Hi picture very good but resorted to using 3.5mm jack from headphone socket on laptop to L/R RCA to amp. It's only way I seem to manage!

Strange tho cause if virgin hd box is connected to tv via HDMI and optical from tv to amp it's outputting the sound thru amp!

well in that case you need to look at your sound card settings.

Or maybe the Laptop is just not able.

But as we have no idea as to what it is no one can say one way or another.

Not that this helps but when I connect my laptop to my TV via HDMI it just works. Additionally all the items I have connected to the TV via HDMI do pass the sound out via the optical connection.

If the picture is coming through I would suggest it is a setting on the laptop or possibly the TV but this is less likely.

What laptop is it? (apologies if you have mentioned this but I cannot remember as I type this reply).
