Am i missing something..?.. why have most of the new AV AMPS got nine hdmi inputs. Why would anyone need that much or is it just a matter of competition and no need for them all..?

Sky box, X Box, PS3, Blu Ray, PC. Thats 5.

Maybe additional media player of some description to make 6?

Just a thought, but maybe not all 9 are inputs.

yes of course they are all inputs.. I can see reason with 3 outputs but 9ins is just a bit much..

I've never heard anyone complain about being given more, i mean it's not like you are being short changed or anything & it's not like you have to use all nine hdmi inputs.

Just out of interest how many hdmi inputs would you like. :?

Remember one is typically on the front, for temporary use i.e camcorders or tabletes etc. Since you have a Zone 2 HDMI out you could potentially have duplicate sources so two people could be watching bluray at once?

Technically if you have an xbox one you'll be running your cable/satellite box into the 'HDMI input' on the console, so your back to 6.

If you added a media server your back up to 7, then the one on the front for temporary inputs (camcorders) so that's 8, but that's about all I can think of either.

The number of people having all 4 consoles on their rack must surely be negligible so 9 inputs does sound a little 'my dad's bigger than your dad' just for marketing purposes.

I can't seem to find any AV receivers with nine inputs, which ones had you in mind? I can however see plenty with eight inputs, which is still more than enough. I myself don't game, so the maximum number of HDMI inputs that I need in any of my receivers is four. What would be more useful are three, rather than two, HDMI outputs, a lack which is bemoaned in the otherwise glowing review of Yamaha's new £5,000 pre-power AV receiver combination, the A5000, in the new (Christmas 2013) issue of Home Cinema Choice magazine. Receivers at around £800 typically now have two HDMI outputs, so it is a bit disappointing to still find only two outputs on a machine that costs five grand.

Aha, but the purists won't like that! :shame:

A purist won't have brought an xbox one in the first place, given 'resolutiongate' ;)

cant see why it would be a negative thing, even if its just for peice of mind. My admittedly quite basic Onkyo amp has only 3 hdmi inputs which means with the blu ray, ps3 and hdd recorder i'm already full. excuse to upgrade though in anticipation of a ps4!

No different from t'old days, when amps used to have two or three tape loops. Nothing more frustrating than finding you've run out of inputs for that extra piece of equipment you want to add to a system.

It's easier to sell kit on numbers rather than performance. Still, it leaves a gaping hole for an affordable (sub £1K) receiver that eschews all this rubbish in favour of sound quality alone. It's never going to happen though as falling behind in the feature race means you lose a star in the reviews. Same with TVs. Smart features are easy to build in and charge for, but most if not all these services are mirrored with your sky box, apple tv etc. How about a simple dumb monitor with great picture quality? Never going to happen.

That's not quite true, it HAS happened, Pioneer did the KRP-500M, which was basically the 500A but without the breakout box and just a single HDMI input, the idea being you'd use your HDMI-equipped AV receiver as the video switching hub. It wasn't much cheaper than the 500A though...

Not sure I agree with that. When smart is implemented properly in the future, I.e when the premium channels and movies are all ip driven, we wont need all the extra boxes like sky box, blurary and Apple TV. The TV is the logical place for smart stuff to be. Its obviously moving in that direction (look at sky now on LG tvs). Death to boxes

The 500m is my dream TV. Never going to happen now is what I should have said! :)

It's an interesting idea but we're a long way away, particularly while we're all relying on BTs infrastructure! Not wishing to move this thread too far from its original point so I'm picturing the new king of the lounge, the all purpose Smart TV doing everything you can shake a stick at, and a receiver sat underneath with 8 HDMI slots going spare!

It's the whole backwards compatibility thing that's annoying me ,no new Console has ever been totally backwards compatible but I'm not even a big gamer and I'm going to have 4 bloody consoles!

nobodys making me buy them but it's nonsense having 4.

i think I would run my TiVo through my oppo tho.
