Hi all. Ive got a Denon AVR-1909 hooked up to a set of Tannoy SFX 5.1. The centre speaker that came in the box sounded a bit rubbish, and after reading a lot of info on tinterweb about the centre speaker on the tannoys, upgraded it to a M.A R180HD. A chap on here last night mentioned i should have all 3 front channels same make ie monitor audio to create seamless soundstage. I can get 2 pairs of the small 45's for fronts and rears. But ive also been thinking of getting a pair of M.A BR1 bookshelfs to reolace the 2 fronts and keep the rear tannoys. Or do I get the BR1's for the front and get the radius 45's for the rear!? Confused.com!!

I am that chap and as correctly pointed out by Strapped For Cash, you should stick with the same range to ensure that the tonal texture remains consistent and coherent, even with the same manufacturer.

I would suggest you get a pair of R90's for the front left and right channels - these will compliment your existing R180 centre nicely and the R45's for the rear left and right.

Sell your Tannoy as a complete system.

ah, hello last nights chap!! I don't think i can stretch to a pair of 90's so think i'll have to just get 2 pairs of 45's. Would the sub matter as much? I do like my tannoy.

You can use your Tannoy sub as an interim measure until you are able to obtain perhaps a MA360 or 370 in the near future, although the value of your Tannoy system would be diminished if you sell them without the sub.

i agree with the above to a point, i think it is best to have the front 3 speakers match tonally.ie be from the same range or at least maker. however i believe the rears can be from a different manufacturer, and any sub should be fine too, once its as powerful as is required..

Agree entirely about the sub -- no need to match range/manufacturer there. I still think there's some advantage to using rear speakers that tonally match the front three. I say that as I used to own Mission dipole rears that sounded completely different from my front three B&Ws. The Missions spread sound nicely, but it was clear there was a lack of tonal integration between the front and rear speakers (which was actually quite off-putting).
