Hi there,

I'm looking for some advice on a first time set up on a £300 - ish budget.

I recently purchased a Project Essential II and Project Phono Box MM Preamp to go with a mini system I currently own.

I'm preferably looking for a pair of Active Speakers to replace the mini system I currently own as space isn't too much of a luxury, although I wouldn't take too much convincing to buy a seperate amp and passive speakers if I'm going to get more bang for my buck.

Bit of a guilty pleasure, but I quite like music with a lot of bass, so preferably the speakers could hold a low end quite well (I've heard the M-Audio BX5 D2 is a solid choice but the low end tapers out).

Further down the line, I was thinking about investing in both a headphone amp and a desktop amp, and thought the Fiio E9/E7 combination would be a good idea?

Any help at all would be appreciated really 🙂

Thanks!

Welcome! Actives are a good choice - I highly recommend the Aktimate mini's (see http://www.whathifi.com/review/aktimate-mini). I have an older version than the ones linked to. I think they're absolutely fantastic. The bass, to me, completely belies their size, with great reach and control. They need a bit of room from the wall (rear ports) or you can just stuff a couple socks in the ports as a temporary fix...

You'd be best to get some stands too though! Otherwise, I'm sure there are some good monitors available (from Focal, Adam etc). I don't know anything about them but I'm sure someone else will be able to help you with that.

Finally, I have a Fiio E7 that I use when travelling - it's great! Don't know about the E9, but the E7 is excellent value and gets a good write-up on here.

Good luck!
