Just a thought ... anyone thinking of binning their turntable next year and coming over from the dark side into the brave new world of digital audio? I see a lot of threads about folks going down the vinyl route and was just wondering if there was an equivalent exodus away from vinyl. I switched over several years ago, and won't be going back.

I listen to both, but my turntable is here to stay. As for all the new vinyl lovers, they'll be bored with it soon enough, as it's just a fashion thing, which'll leave us vinyl lovers with record flooded market, which will hopefully bring the inflated prices back to where they should be.

I'm going to buy a DAC in the new year. If the sound quality I then get from my iPads is then of sufficient standard, I may lose the TT... I only have around 80-100 records, so I could always get rid of those too..... I'd then probably buy a better DAC/Amp....

The short answer is: tempted? Yes. Pulling the trigger? Not yet.....

I don't see why the two can't live next to each other.

Of course, if you don't use your TT than there is very little point.

Imho, no 'real' hifi system is complete without vinyl but after my recent move I had to seriously dig deep to still support that view ... .

Bet you are a little tempted ... just a little bit ... otherwise you wouldn't raise this topic no? :)

As an objet d'art most definitely, as something to play music on, not so much ... *acute*

If I'm going for hifi nostalgia, I prefer a valve amplfier to a turntable *music2*

Haven't had a record deck for quite a few years now, the last being a Linn Access and not tempted to go back at all. I'm considering buying a DAC in the new year, something like a Metrum Octive to run the Sonos connect through. Will have to try before I buy though.

Merry Christmas to you all

I have three sources and wouldn't want to get rid of any.the convenience of streaming is great and I own well over 1k Cd's,so I can't really get shot of that either, but vinyl..it just holds a special place in my heart,it's what I grew up on,it's what used to get me through the breakups with old flames and get drunk with, with the lads,it generally gets you more involved with the playing of music and that makes me sit down and listen,no skipping tracks and flicking back and forth of various albums, music listening with vinyl becomes more involving at all levels, although to get it sounding really nice many sheckles has to be spent unfortunately to really make it worth your while.

I actually stopped somebody from buying one of those God awful crossley things in my local hmv today.the guy had crossley in one hand and a couple of albums in the other,I looked at him and said are you actually going to put them on that thing,he answers yes and I kind of shook my head and said it'll destroy that expensive vinyl your just about to buy.he sat it back down,we had a wee chat and off he went happy in the knowledge he didn't blow 80 quid on....well we all know what these things are and to call them turntables is an insult to the medium.

Even back in the day when I had a tape deck and turntable I still wasn't totally convinced by playing records ... even then I considered it a faff, but at least it did sound better than hissy tape. CD players were a revelation when they appeared ... they had a remote control and you could selectrewindfast forwardreplay any track without having to get off your a*** :)

The mass exodus was quarter of a century ago. Many people buying into the format these days are likely to be in it for the long haul, except the hipster types who'll get shot of their Crossleys when a new fad comes along. I've also read a fair few threads on here from some of the 'new to vinyl' brigade where I can easily see from the tone of their opening posts that within a year their turntable will either be sold or gathering dust. Like the ones dropping £1,000 on their first deck and they join-up here to complain that it didn't come with Jackanory instructions on how to do really basic things like unclip the tonearm from its rest.

I found a video of an audiophile that successfully tuned his livingroom acoustics with new Rega speaker cables. Clicky

Small world, I was only recently watching one of his vinyl-play videos (Africa by ToTo) on his RP8, couple of weeks ago. The only thing I took away from it is his turntable and cartridge costs more money than I've ever been able to spend on any single piece of hifi and it still sounds crap at the end of a record (better than my Thorens though)

I'm subscribed to Mark's channel to leech on music reviews and recommendations and I usually skip all hi-fi talk. But this video reminded me of your recent rant about new WHF forum posters. *biggrin*
