Hey There,

I´m totally new to the HiFi world but very excited to build my first system.

Sadly though I´m kind of a noob in this topic so I started this forum to discuss with you, in this case hopefully one with more knowledge about this than me, where to start and what to keep an eye on.

In my case:

I´ve got some, in my oppinion, beautiful headphones (the AKG K712 Pro) last christmas and immediatly after the FiiO E12 Mount Blank (a portable AMP). Now I´d like to build myself a HiFi system with no Speakers in first place due to the fact that I´m not alone in my house and the headphones mentioned above. So like an amplifier and a cd player in the range of 600-1000 € in total, an later adding a turntable and in a few years also speakers.

But theres also the problem: As I sad im totally new to HiFi and system building. Like how expensive may the cd player in comparison to the amplifier be and which brands are to choose from in this case. Or should i just buy a headphone amplifier and a cd player or... or.... or....

I hope everyone who`s interested in this thread can read it (because English isn´t my motherlanguage) and I didn´t messed anything up with the topics, threads, forums and what not.

Nice greatings anyway from Salzburg, Austria.

Welcome to the forum!

Many contributors here are from the magazine's home county, so unfortunately we do not know what brands you have nearby nor the price in euros. However, you could do worse than consider the multi award winning Marantz 6005 amp and CD player.

All the recommended gear is reviewed on this site, so you will be able to compare what you can buy locally with what is reviewed here. Do check out your own stockists though as many good EU brands are poorly represented here. And if you want to see previous questions about anything on the forum, it is best to google it, as the site search no longer seems to index forum comments.

Good luck!

the amount you spend on each component is debatable, personally i try and keep it to an even bias - so the same on the amp / CD / speakers....as youre not interested in speakers that leaves you with roughly 1000 euro, so 500 euro on CD and amp. For that money i think the CD player is a no brainer, the Marantz CD6005...as for the amp theres a few up for contention in that bracket. The easy option would be the Marantz PM6005, but also possibly Rotel RA-10 .....and if you can stretch it maybe Rega Brio-R.

Not sure which of those amps has the best headphones output though

That looks like good advice. The Marantz CD6005 has a headphone outlet so you wouldn't need to buy the amp until later.

Thank you,

I think the brand wont make a differnets wether its european or not, because my retailer will probably order it anyway. 😀

I read the review on the Marantz 6005 and also on the cd player and i wondered what´s the major differents between the 6005 and for example the 7005. Is there a lot of improvment or is it not worth the higher price?

But thank you anyway for such a fast answer, I really appreciate it.

The PM 7005 has considerably more output power than the PM 6005, 60W rather than 45W into 8 ohms, and that might be important depending on what speakers you end up with. In terms of the CD player I can recommend the SA8005 if you can stretch to that.

hi

Besides the improved power on the 7005, the PM7005 also has a USB DAC - which i was gonna suggest anyway. If you do some reading, you'll find out about DACs (it's like a CD player without the CD spinning mechanism - like an outboard soundcard if you will). A CD player has a dac inside it, but not the connectivity for different sources. If you want to get a CD player, by all means do - the Marantz CD6005 is a great suggestion, and goes well with the PM6005.

BUT: If you have a laptop or even a bluray/dvd player with optical or coaxial out, you could connect that to the PM7005 and let the DAC in the Marantz take care of the processing. Also, you can rip all your CD collection into FLAC (or ALAC if you're an apple user), and have all the music in a library, and just play it on the laptop or bluray player, sound being taken care of by the DAC.

So my alternative suggestions would be a Marantz PM7005 + laptop/bluray player or smartTV with digital out, or a Nad D3020 (to which you could later add a cheap phono stage on its analogue input - for a turntable), or, if it can fir your budget, Micromega MyDac/Arcam iRDac + Arcam FMJ A19 - these 3 amps should match your headphones very well. Later you could add a pair of Dali Zensor 3 to the Marantz or Nad, Kef Q300 to the Nad, and Focal Aria 906 to the Arcam.

Hope this wasn't too complicated.

Thanks again ^^,

I really need to think about these suggestions and I really appreciate these, but my primary goal (might missed to tell that) was to listen to my cds and add a turntable in one or two years.

So the CD6005 seems to be a pretty good choice right now.

Due to my excitment I searched a bit in the web and stumbled uppon Pro-Ject Audio (is anyone out there who has some experience with that brand) and they seem pretty cheap in comparison to what their devices can (don´t know if that was an english sentence^^). So what about the MaiA DS and the CD Box DS, does anyone has some experience with them? And/or is it even worth it to look for an alternative?

Anyway I relly thankful for all these answers

But that's exactly my point - you can still play the CDs on whatever cheap dvd player / bluray player / laptop / hi-fi cd player that has a digital out, and use the DAC in the PM7005 for instance, but you get much better amp this way. Imo.

Why is the OP buying a Marantz PM7005/6005 to use it for his headphones? Is this a joke thread???

He needs a dedicated headphone amplifier.

He needs a dedicated headphone amplifier.

Edit: He does mention possibly adding speakers a few years down the track.

Personally I'd be looking at a headphone rig in that situation - a dedicated headphone amp or combined DAC and amp (must have analogue inputs for his record player) is what those headphones deserve. A CD player is a possibility either on its own or into a DAC (or use a computer as a source). Worry about getting a budget amp to go with budget speakers further down the track. Either way, a semi decent headphone rig will sound much better than the budget speakers and amp.

I guess you could get the CD6005 and just use the headphone out on that until you are ready to buy an amp for use with the record player when you buy it and the speakers when you get them.

We all know the headphone output in integrated amps and AVRs is generally poo. Proper dedicated headphone amp can be had for little money these days.

It's actually pretty good in the Marantz kit. It was fine in the CD6004 I used to have and excellent in the PM6004. Added to the OP requirement of being able to add speakers later this makes the recommendation very sensible IMO.

I´m pretty thankful for all your help.

So what about getting the CD6005 and a dedicated headphone amp?

Which would you recommend in a reasonable price-range. (Don´t know how much it may cost in comparison to the cd-player)
