Change of plan!

Instead of trying to get a high end speaker by buying a cheap old pair that could prove problematic I'm looking at new ones.

Would Spendor SP2/SR3 work well with my current electronics?

Not interested in changing other kit, just speakers.

I can go and demo a pair but wondering if its worth the time.

I would demo the speakers, preferably with my kit, and then get a home demo if I think its worth it.

Go for the demo, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Speakers are a very personal thing and you are likely to get very differing responses that may just serve to leave you even more confused.
Audition whatever you can is the only way to find out what is acceptable to you.

Got a Quad 67 CD player last week.
Just booked a demo of the Spendor SP2/3R2 for next week.
Taking my Quad kit with me.
They think they might work well together.

Why do you change your speakers so often?

unless I'm mistaken you for someone else you had some small Spendors went to the 782's you had in the house and then got a pair of Quad 22l....right.

The latter two speakers are good (I'm not keen on standmounts myself) surely you should look into swapping out the Quad electronics if you can't get no satisfaction from the speakers you've owned.

I know its your money and your choice but its worth investgating. in fact I'd suggest getting amplification from the same era of your speaker release dates.

those quads are good - I own the Mission 782se and know these speakers will deliver when well matched. With that budget you are really spoiled for choice.

the Quad 909 power amp is worth investigating to drive those 22's

If you can stomach the looks (I think they have a certain industrial chic, but then what do I know?) and if you can find some to listen to, Monopulse Model A might match quite nicely. They work beautifully with Croft amplification, pretty sensitive, so might work well with the Quad gear? I love love love 'em!

Thompsonuxb you are correct as to the speakers I have owned.

I owned:

Cyrus amps with Mission 782, Von Schweikert VR1, Spendor SA1

Quad amps with Mission 782, Spendor SA1, Quad 21L2, Castle Richmond II

So I have tried, to a limited extent, the same speakers with different amps.

With the addition of a Quad 67 CD player I now have almost the sound I want.

Just a bit more bass extension but keeping the quality & tautness and the qualities of the Richmond II’s but better if possible and I'm done.

Got another thread going for suggestions of speakers.

My philosohy is that you can't have too many speakers or amps (and I mean that in all seriousness). No harm in chopping, changing and tweaking to get the sound you want.

As I always tell the missus, a new amp or pair of speakers is definitely going to keep me at home - and away from the pub. :shifty:
