OK -the extension starts in the new year which I am told is music only(ie no TV).So I have agreement we shall relocate the phone/broadband/ new NAS into this room plus the switch.Turntable/cd player and amp willl also feature.

I now need to know the most reliable storage device which can act as the hub.Don't ask the budget question cos I will take each recommendation on its merit(but don't talk silly money).I'll just say I will do an MP for the cd/amp (Matthew Piano- budget but great sound)

Recommendations welcome.

Hi RDG. When I had my little dalliance with a NAS I went for Buffalo as, according to customer reviews on Amazon, they rated very well. Reading through, there were fewer comments of 'I could not get it to work' and 'after onlt two weeks it broke down'. Mine was set up very easily and worked fine.

If you do buy a Buffalo, I would advise against using the company Avides who sell through Amazon. After I had got up and running I saw I had 500gb and not 1tb NAS which is what I had paid for. The wrong barcode was on the outerpackaging. They have a terribly slow returns policy, were difficult to communicate with and they were not open to a replacement, they just wanted to refund my money, but then took over a month to do so.

I bought my Buffalo NAS from Play and have had no problems with it. It runs over a Homeplug network to my Mac, which then connects to my Pre-amp. Works very well.

Thanks guys-

WHF team- in the reviews there is one on a Terastation. Can you let me know the exact model as there are lots of them. Also what other recommendations of make are there for NAS devices.

From memory when I was looking, the What Hifi review is for one of these behemoths; Terrastation which I reject on size, cost and because they seem to be more for work enironments. I got one of these; Drivestation2share which is a network hard drive. It does not have any programmes on it and it needs a PC to be on to act as the music server. Then there is the Linkstation which by some form of witchcraft can work without a PC.

I suspect that NASs are not reviewed that often by What Hifi because there are so many variations and version changes, it would impossible to keep up. I would recommend reading a PC magazine instead or checking online reviews. That is what I did.

I also am using a Buffalo device (1TB Linkstation Live) as my music server. Got it from Amazon themselves (not another 3rd party off Marketplace) for a decent price. It was so simple to set up and connect it was unbelievable. HOWEVER, and there must be a BUT here, it is often disconnecting itself from my home network (Windows XP with a Netgear broadband modem/router). All it could need might be a firmware upgrade possibly. I will be looking into it properly in the next day or so, but it is a little disappointing. I'm pretty sure it's fixable though so I'm not too worried (just yet).
