Hey All, Need a lil advise from the experts. I have recently bought a SONY STRDA1200ES, Q Acoustics 1030's and 1000C Centre. I will be getting a new sub and matching rears/sides soon. I wanted to add a blu ray player to the system as my HD drive for the 360 is now absolete!!!!! I understand the PS3 is probably the best with it's constant updates. The latest update allows it to decode DTS HD. Will my new receiver be able to take this and if so how do I connect it?? I also understand that DTS HD can't travel along Optical so am I stuck? I have the receiver setup with 7.1 using some old speakers so I can literally have 7.1 but I want it to be proper not forced. Thanks for your time :)

I don't know much about the PS3, but I know the Sony has no precessing for any of the HD formats on board.

How recently did you buy the 1200? I wonder if you'd be able to return it as not fit for purpose, and pick up an HD compatible receiver like the Onkyo TX-SR606?

Don't you need 7 analogue wires?? Where would they go in the PS3 I thought it only had optical out?

I think it's the reciever part that's the easy part. On the back, you should find your multi-channel inputs (Phono/RCA plugs, usually clourcoded like your speaker connectors, red = left, white = right, green = centre, purple = sub, etc). The question is whether the PS3 has the multi-channel outputs.

Yeah I know thats what I was asking. I know it decodes on the PS3 but don't think you can send HD down the Optical. Where is Claire and the experts when you need them haha :)
Yeah so Gerrad you have this receiver. How do I do it?
Right, yes, if you want a 7.1 you will need 8 cables (4 pairs - http://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/dynamic/eshop_products.set/ref/2022/fisual-install-series-phono-cables/display.html) should do the trick. On the back panel of your receiver, under the phono and SACD inputs is the multi channel inputs. That's where the cables go. I've just realised what you said about the PS3 and that it has no analogue connectivity! I did not realise that. Have you already bought the PS3? If not the new Panasonic bluray player decodes onboard (I think) and so this would work with your receiver.

Haven't bought one yet so options are still open. So even though it decodes onboard can it still not send the signal over optical. Just trying to understnad the process
Cheers Gerrad you a star as always

Indeed, optical can't carry the bandwidth required for HD audio. Also, the Panasonic DMP-BD30 doesn't decode DTS MA HD or Dolby TrueHD onboard so this is no good for you either. Your best choices available at the moment are the Sony BDP-S500 or the Pioneer BDP-LX70A which can decode onboard and have the 5.1 channel outputs. Or you can wait for the whole host of new players coming out soon including the Panasonic DMP-BD50 which is hotly awaited from a lot of people I think.
