Hello

First time posting here on these forums... certianly not first time reading, never buy a thing without searching these forums for hours first :) but now i need some direct advice....

We recently upgraded to Virgin HD and so we went out and bought a Panasonic TH-37px80 (to replace our old cheap and nasty Beko CRT)... with which we are seriosuly impressed... way better than our friends more expensive Samsung and my parents more expensive Sony...

This has now lead me to start thinking about DVD players... i have a very large DVD collection, and have no intention of upgrading to Blu-ray just yet, so basically my question is this - what DVD player, at the lower end of the market, will make the most of my new TV? Ideally i'd like a Panasonic to make use of the Viera Link... but are panasonic DVD players actually any good?.. i have been looking at the DVD-S52, DVD-S53 & DVDS54.... but i wonder if using this to upscale will result in any picture improvement over just letting my new TV to the work? I have to admit to not knowing too much about upscaling... at the moment i have an old Sony dvd player, and basically, i'd like to know the best way to get a better picture for under £100...

Is the Panasonic DVD-0S52/3/4 a bad idea?

Any help and advice would be hugely appriciated :)

Consider the Toshiba XD-E500; (check out the WHF review). You can buy it for around £80and it's a superb upscaling DVD player.

Have a look on Amazon, they've all got good reviews. I'm in the same boat as you, just bought Panasonic DMP - BD 55, Panasonic 46PZ80 and now i'm looking for a really good DVD upscaler. I'll see what people suggest and I'll let you know if i find anything that looks good enough.

Thanks, Rorschach

Why are you after an upscaling DVD if you've bought a BD-55? Thought the BD-55 was supposed to be very good with DVD's also!

If you want a Panasonic, you really shouldn't be looking any further than the Panasonic DMP-BD35 or the Panasonic DMP-BD55 - either will upscale your DVDs brilliantly.

Okay, they are both Blu-Ray players, but this is not a disadvantage at all. There seems to be a myth being spread about that if you buy a Blu-Ray player, you then have to upgrade every DVD you own. This isn't true, virtually all Blu-Ray players play and upscale DVDs and many of them do it very well thank you very much! I have over 500 DVDs and now just over 60 Blu-Rays - I still enjoy my DVDs because my Sony BDP-S550 upscales them very well indeed and, as a general rule, I only buy new films on Blu-Ray (and occasionaly I upgrade my very favourite DVDs if they're cheap). I certainly have absolutely no intention of replacing every single DVD I have - that would be madness!

There are now very few players which can beat the latest Blu-Ray players for DVD upscaling and none of them are future proof. With either of these players, you're looking at superb performance from your exisitng DVD collection, and also an opporunity to buy the odd Blu-Ray bargain (checking it's a decent transfer with WHF or the Leisure Lab first of course!) and see what the fuss is all about.

I fully agree with the venerable Prof. Although I have the Toshiba 500 (lounge), I also own the Panasonic DMP-BD35 (home cinema room) which, in addition to being a fine Blu-ray player, is an excellent DVD upscaler, that I think most people would be more than happy with.

Thanks for all your comments so far...

The trouble with the Blu-ray option is that they ares till a bit expensive for me... having just bought a new TV i was just hoping for a temporary solution DVD player wise to get the best out of watching DVD's on my new TV.... until i can afford to spend some big money again...

Does anyone have any experience of the Panasonic S54... also is the only difference of the S52 and S53 that they do not output 1080p? As my tv doesn't display 1080p would i gain any benefit at all of getting the S54 over the S52 or S53?

Also, would any of these Panasonics be worth getting at all? Would i get the benift? Or is it best to jsut stick with my old Sony and let the TV handle the upscaling?
