I am thinking of getting a ipod classic and would like to "dock" it in the PS3 when listening out loud because for me, that gives teh best results. I would rip music to it in WAV format. So I need to know 2 things, please:

1. Can you rip to the new ipod in WAV format?

2. Will the PS3 recognise all the tracks if I connect using a USB cable?

Thanks.

Hey there,

all ipods are compatible with WAV format(well certainly Classic, Nano, Touch/iPhone). But i'd recommend Apple Lossless instead of WAV as it's more space efficient, and def better for tagging, pasting album art, etc.

As for connecting iPod to PS3, i'm not sure. It's not something i've heard of before. Couldn't you just connect iPod to your amplifier instead?

OR do you mean using the iPod as a kind of mini hard drive, for the PS3s media player to read audio files from??(i'm getting in over my head here...)

I think you can do this as long as you manage the storage of the audio on the IPod yourself. So you would need to create a folder structure such as Artist / Album / Track.wav. You should then be able to plug it into the PS3 and choose "Display All" to see all tracks. However I don't know how you will browse the music when using the IPod itself. You will not be able to browse by artist / album / genre etc. and so for that reason it isn't something I would do.

I have all my music ripped to wav and stored on an external HDD connected to the PS3 however I would probably create a tagged MP3 copy if I wanted to use this music on my IPod. I'm sure some of the ripping tools can produce both a wav version and a compressed and tagged version (EAC can run an external encoder).
