I'm looking to purchase a new amplifier for a set of wharfedale valdus 500's which are large floorstanding speakers.

Looking to spend up to £300, preferably around/under £200. Ideally looking for second hand amps with a lot of power which will not overheat during extended listening at extreme volumes.

Is the arcam alpha 9/10 a good choice? Nad 370 etc? audiolab 8000a? any other suggestions?

Want high fidelity at normal levels but also something which can play loud without complaining. My current amp overheats often.

See also the Harman HK3490, the Cambridge 650A, the Harman HK980 too.

Arcam Alpha 10 all the way; superb, powerful amp with a great soundstage and will withstand a number of upgrades!

It was a £900 retailer in its days and still stands its ground well.

Much better than the HK & Cambridge Audio amps IMO

...Although I think you'll struggle to bag one for under £200. £300 should do the trick though.

I got an Arcam A85 for £285 a couple of years back.
