Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my very dated Kenwood R-SA7 receiver. I'm having trouble deciding between a stereo amp or an AV amp. The 2 models I'm looking at are (both Yamaha) the A-S500 and the RX-V667.

I don't really need surround sound, but the AV amp will allow me to connect my sources digitally rather than relying on the DACs in my sky box and PC and will also allow me to use the spare channels to Bi-amp the speakers (Mission M73i floorstanders).

Would either of the amps i'm considering be a good pairing with my existing speakers or could someone suggest alternatives? I have a budget of £300 for the amp. I'm not able to replace the speakers due to financial and marital reasons.

The system will be mainly used for TV/movie viewing (Sky HD) and pop/electronic/dance music from a PC.

Thanks.

A good question - the A-S500 is arguably better all things considered at stereo performance as this is principally what it's designed for. Having said that the RX-V667 offers excellent stereo performance as well (and don't forget this retails for a much higher amount of £450 despite Yamaha's current offers so it is a step up above the A-S500) Any chance of having a listen to both?

Good call on trying out the '667 - I think it could be pretty decent and well worth auditioning. Assignable amps internally mean you could end up with 180wpc. A high current design too - not to be sniffed at!
