Dan.m:Roger.
How are you getting on with your WD 1TB NAS. I am thinking of getting one from curry's for £99 or 2TB for £140. May even consider the my book 2 (2TB) for £179 that can be set up to raid as back up. Any advice/experiences welcomed
Hi Dan
Well the jury's been out for a while but I think I can now safely give it the thumbs up and suggest you buy one.
My biggest frustration was that it kept disappearing - however, it now seems quite reliable. I think what I like best the ability to plug in another external USB hard drive. This is great as you can back it up and if you're really diligent store it away from your home etc. So I guess you could consider the1TB model and get a 1TB USB drive.
I guess it's up to you and how much storage you need as to which one you get. I'm beginning to think the 2TB would have been better for me.
I've found transfer speeds to be fine. OK, if I've got a lot to transfer over I'll plug in rather than use wireless. The back up software seems OK - but I'm having slight problems getting it to back up my iPhoto library which I manually copied onto it, but then I back it up it wants to effectively copy it all again, into the iPhoto library... but I'm sure I'll get that sorted.
I could probably rumble on for ages but I don't regret buying it. I think I still have a lot of learning to do but I can possibly see me adding another in future. I'm lucky enough to have a wired network in most of the house and this certainly helps.
It does seem to show up reliably now and I do love the way I can easily back up data - a great example is importing photos of my new born girl onto my PowerBook - then I just drag 'em across to the NAS and leave it to back up.
My Sony DB player now happily streams photos and vids - doesn't like music though but I've saved in lossless and I think it wants MP3...
Good luck - and please let me know if you get one as we can probably learn from each other.
I also think there's a new model - a
My Book Live not sure what the difference is, maybe a faster processor.
