NAS folders & iTunes

Hi,

I've got a QNAP NAS which I'm using to share music between a few devices. The problem is, on the two main laptops in my house, I'm not sure how to get the NAS drive to auto-mount on startup. One's running XP, and the other W7, so I'm guessing the solution would be different for each.

I have my music on the NAS, and I added the NAS media folder to iTunes, so that's where iTunes goes for tunes, although the network share isn't set as the default media folder for iTunes.

I originally mounted the drives on each machine using the QFinder software, not directly through Windows, I don't know if this alters anything.

On my win7 machine, the drive share is there in My computer when I boot up, and I can just go straight in to it without having to enter any login info. However, if I miss this step out and go straight in to iTunes, the music stored on the NAS is labelled as missing. I have to actually enter the folder in My Computer and then open iTunes for the music to be present in my library.

on the XP machine, I have to go to My Computer, click on the drive, and then re enter the login info for the NAS every time, before going in to iTunes, otherwise the same thing happens.

Any ideas for how to make sure automounting the drive will happen every time I boot, in both a Win7 and an XP environment? And will this be enough to ensure iTunes finds the music stored there every time I boot the laptop and open iTunes?

I would try Map Network Drive from Windows Explorer and make sure you tick Reconnect at Logon.

If you still have problems, tt may help to give the QNAP a fixed ip address

I mapped the share on my Win7 machine and that's fine. There's a problem still on the WinXP machine in that it doesn't seem to remember the login details for the NAS share from one reboot to the next.

The Media share on my NAS, by default, is password protected. The Win7 laptop seems to remember these details from one reboot to the next, but the XP machine doesn't. I don't know why. I guess I could change the default media share to one that isn't password protected, but that could cause other issues.

Has anyone had this occur with XP, where you have to log in to a NAS share each time you boot?

Looks like running a bat file on startup that executes a net use will do the trick

Thanks for this. I have no technical experties in the area, but it looks from the second linked article that if I get the Nas all connected up and passworded in manually, and then go in to the command prompt and use the Net Use persistent = yes command, that should save all the net info, including the mapped share with username & passwword details, for next time. Not sure about this, but that's the way it seems. Surprisingly complex though for something you'd think was a simple operation many users would want: the ability of your OS to connect to a username protected share on a NAS at startup.

I was surprised but my bit or research showed that it is a known issue, but I guess they have fixed it for 7.
