Naim DAC due in May

£2k!!!! Do you need to buy a separate PSU?

Edit: I presume they are looking at Chord. It'll most likely be akin to many of their CD players offered at a similar or lesser price. I'm not Nostradamus, I like Naim but that price seems a little too steep...

chebby:This will boost Benchmark sales.

Too bad I already own one, I could always buy another...ÿ

It would need to play the flutes of life itself if I was to pay that much for it.ÿ

2 grand? Yeeouch. Still, you've got to admire their bravado, especially in the current economic climate. Shoot me down in flames if you will, but I think the law of diminishing returns makes this kind of price the preserve of the super-keen Naim enthusiast. Ok, no one's expecting it to be ten times better than a DacMagic, but I find it difficult to imagine it being "£1800 better", whatever that means...

Hmm, I'd like to wait and exactly what it does before making a judgemental comment, Naim has a habit recently of putting more into a box than first thought, take the new naimuniti for instance..

Yus, fair enough. To be clear, I was being judgemental about the price, not the unit obviously. I know that may seem paradoxical, as the two are interdependent... I guess it's just that I find it hard to imagine paying that kind of money for a DAC, even if I could afford to.

2K is reasonable amount in the grand scheme of things when you consider the price of the CD555, Naim are a high end brand that attract a certain customer, they are not chasing the same market as what Cambridge Audio are for example, your just never going to see at £200 Naim DAC.

No doubt, though there are competitors offering for a quarter of the price. One day I'll get my hands on one - the Benchmark and Stello are leaping for joy at the prospect of the challenge.ÿ

Nor should Naim try to compete with entry level Cambridge Audio gear... Just consider how Musical Fidelity's V-DAC has been totally ignored compared to the DACMagic..... Sometimes High End Manufacturers shouldn't wander too far from their traditional price ranges...

I'm not really sure which demographic you can target at £2G (though I appreciate Naim are an intelligent bunch and will do what suits them best). The Naim crew (buyers) are an unmoveable bunch.

Naim 'probably' don't care what the competitors are charging, Naim have a loyal customers base that are crying out for a DAC, now they've got one and they will pay for it. Naim have a image as a specialist high end manufacture, they will never make products to compete with Cambridge Audio etc, that's not saying one is better than the other, just different markets and brand imaging.

It's fairly easy, just look at the ages of their customers, and the upgrades their products allow, it's so well thought it, they are like pringles, once you pop you can't stop as they've got you hooked as you reach out for the next upgrade.

As I said for the general Naim customer 2K for a DAC just isn't that big deal.

I doubt the DAC modules in the CD5i or the new NaimUniti cost even a tiny fraction of £200 even if placed in a seperate box with it's own plugtop PSU.

I can't see why Naim wouldn't make a budget £200 DAC (aimed at Nait folk) and charge £499 and get away with it. It is something else they could get people to buy a Hicap for.

A £499 to £999 Naim DAC (to match the Nait 5i) might come out eventually.... but I don't think we'll ever see a £200 one....
