I was fairly happy with my system until this year when i got a severe case of "upgraditis" so I changed a few things got a new amp, blu ray and better mains conditioners. Now with the Yamaha i'm finally getting the most out of my speakers the control and grip with either music or film is very good. I'm using the PF30 with my sub, PF40 on the rest of the system, my Room layout is not ideal I know but it works very well for me, heres my pics.....hopefully !!

Hya Stu - your kit very similar to mine then

http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/501588.aspx

I too have the centre in a 'closed' unit - have you a back to your AV-TV unit? I have 'blocked' my rear port with rubber 'straws' to cool the bass. Latest is all speakers set to small and 80Hz crossover. Doesnt make sense but it seems to work and virtually all the forum seems to recommend this setting.

A bit geeky maybe but please share your settings! My rears are on Atacama stands and I have a small centre back behind the sofa but not really sure it makes much difference.

The V2065 sounds better with least processing I find. Straight or Pure except for Dolby Pro where some processing is useful (Drama or Sci-Fi).

Still experimenting with toe in and rear angles and I have a second Yamaha 80W sub which is set to filter very low.

Any successful experiments would be useful to know. Should I rip out the back of my cabinet I wonder?

Nice system - but I would say that wouldn't I 🙂

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob,

Yeah my unit is enclosed but i haven't blocked the port tho as I don't find the centre too overpowering basswise to be honest, do you find it overpowering then with the port unblocked ?

My speakers are all set to large with the cross over set to 80Hz as the amp set it, I haven't played around with the settings to much as yet.

When watching Blu Rays I use the Pure as it seems to be slightly clearer to my ears, plus I prefer the cool blu light rather than all the front panel lit up and it looks good at night next to the PF40's front panel.

For sky or tv viewing through the amp I use the 7 channel standard and that seems to work pretty good.

I have my fronts toe'd in and the noise sounds fullest at about 25/30 degrees to me.

Cheers

Funny how two so similar systems appear to be set up/sound apparently so different. (New thread needed?)

My auto setup sets all speakers to large and a crossover of 40Hz. I change them (following repeated advice here) to small and 80Hz. The front sounded awful inside the cabinet until I choked it and I adjust the equalizer a little to smooth the centre vocals. My fronts focus just in front of the listening position. I guess the main difference in rooms is that my sofa is against the back wall, not ideal. The fronts too are close to the corners.

Guess I will keep 'playing' though I am more than pleased with the system. Not too sure about stereo performance. I used to have a separate CD player and I think I lose some sound staging/focus but I find little time to listen that critically to worry.

Well - time to go and move the woofer and make final adjustements. (Nah - partner wants to vacuum behind the sofa really)

Cheers

Rob

Stu - I would bring the centre speaker out (even if it's only to watch the movie, then put it back) so that it's at least level with the front of the cabinet. You'll be getting HF reflection off the shelf, and with the what seems to be a lip that comes down above the centre, that's probably reflecting some HF back into the cabinet. Your centre information should sound much bigger and accurate if you can free it of as many influences around it

Yeah I was thinking the same.

Crossover of 40Hz ???? would the sub ever get run in lol !?!

Will have another play at the weekend and try setting them all to small with 80Hz crossover and see what it sounds like.

I was using just the hdmi from blu ray to my old Onk 606 amp then I added a decent stereo interconnect for cd playback when i got the 2065.
When flicking between the two the hdmi connection sounds lacking by comparison to the stereo lead.

As you say there's always a tweak here or there to be made !

Ah cheers David i'll try that, would it be worth me recalibrating the speakers with the set up mic first, or just moving the speaker further forward ?

David you were right it sounds "fuller" now, great stuff.

Robin, sorry mate copying you again

as i'm adding a 2nd sub, managed to get hold of another evo sub which will hopefully be here for friday, happy days !!

Cheers

Hi Rob

I know the feeling !

Well the 2nd hand sub arrived (albeit a different colour ready to go behind the sofa!) the other day but i never had a chance to try the 2 subs together.

I swopped it over with mine first to test it with identical settings etc and yep you guessed it its faulty with a flapping like noise at highish volumes when the speaker cone is moving in and out which is not present on mine.

I wanted another evo sub but they're pretty hard to get hold of now so not sure which model to go for really ?

A flappy sub does not sound great. Hope u can get ur £ back. A post here recons AE are good to deal with - maybe they have an old driver available? My second sub is a Yammy 80W. No way a match but seems to add a little solidity to the bottom end. I dont think it matters what u go 4 but hey I know nuffin.

No idea how u can balance 2 subs either except by experiment.

Good luck (Ebay or Gumtree?)

Cheers Stu

Didn't want to spend to much at first as it was just an experiment but yeah should have no problem getting the money back.

Really wanted to keep with the AE brand so i've just bought a refurbished AE Radience Sub direct from Acoustic Energy via ebay.
Theres a few chaps on here who have done the same and they seem fairly happy with them so i thought i'd get one of those to try.

Cheers

Very nice setup. I like the TV stand a lot. Where did you get it from and how tall is it if you don't mind me asking.

The unit is made out of pine from a company in East Yorkshire called SolidWood Interiors they sell alot of furniture on Ebay.
I was specifically after a wooden 3 shelf unit for my av components not including the tv, unfortunately for me though the internal depth was slightly too short to take an amp and the gaps between the shelves were only 15cms high and i needed 20cms to allow clearance for my centre speaker and amp so I had them make me one with the required spacings and backing for £280 18 months ago, can't recommend the company enough the worksmanship is excellent.

External measurements are 105cm wide, 79.5cm high and 48cm deep but they'll make it to any size you require

Cheers

Yea Anima - a stand with enough headroom took a lot of finding for me too. I found a match for my Windsor oak furniture locally. Recon I should have cut out the back panel tho. Few furniture manufacturers seem to know that a centre speaker tends to be a big beast. R U near Worcestershire? Take a look at mine if so.

Cheers Stu - hows yr sub?

Should be here sometime tomorrow or thurs... hopefully as don't know who the carrier is, I know DHL aren't currently taking any parcels locally as they're working through a backlog .

Anima999:
That is exactly my problem, finding something with shelf spacing large enough yet not modern looking. I would be looking at getting one with two shelves as I have less kit :

http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/530938.aspx

I will check that company out.

Thanks

Anima999,

How any luck with finding a suitable rack ?

Cheers Stu - hows yr sub?

The radiance is great when running the two together its really made a difference i now have no flat bass spots, bass is not ever muddled which is good but i maybe having a change so the radiance may have to end up on ebay soon.

Very nice set up!

Going to sound a bit strange, but couldn't help noticing the awesome looking cinema-esque framed THX, Dolby True HD and Blu Ray etc signs on the wall, and was wondering where you got them from, as I'd love to add a set to my set up

Thanks!

Thanks very much, Ebay is your friend, I can't post any links i'm afraid you get two sets of prints they came from Denmark I think.
Had to buy the A3 black clip frames separately off there aswell, prints and frames about £22 in total.

Cheers
