Music, detail, presence!

I have spent the last couple of hours (with the cat on my lap, he was listening as well!)
being swept away by some of my favourite artists. (Eric Clapton - Unplugged, Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run, Dire Straits - Local Hero track, Pavarotti etc)

Now I have an AV system and play (for music) on PL2 which gives me the widest separation, detail and range to the music in my lounge, and I can honestly say that it is the best system I have had ever!

There is no way I could play my Thornes 160/Hadcock arm/AT Moving Coil deck at these sound levels without a hope skip and a jump,or even my Meridian 206CD player!

Now the music wasn't loud, the voices were at natural levels, but the detail, impact and range of everything else made its presence felt.

Now, if everything was 'out of the box' standard it would sound not a patch on a Cyrus/Spendor system, never mind a good one with Mono blocks/PSX units with decent cables.
Having had such systems in the past (and better) this is the most complete set up that I have owned with it been modified with Mains Conditioning to a much higher degree than ever before on previous systems.

How things have moved forward. Oh I play it off a Sony Hard drive to boot.

If one or two of you fancy a listen and want to pop to Leeds and have something decent to compare it with you are welcome.

Oh dear, what have I said.

I live on the South Coast so that's a bit far to travel!

However, it would be nice if someone could give your system a listen and provide some validation for your suggestions. (Not saying I don't believe you though Trev.

I would very much like to visit and evaluate your system Trevor. From everything you post here it seems that you have an evolved understanding of how to achieve real quality in music reproduction. I look forward to listening.

If ever I was in Leeds, then I would love to come over and join you in laughing in the face of those who think it's snake oil. I too am loving listening to some Angus & julia Stone, and Tracey Chapman that just sounds superb, and significantly better than before with just one mains lead change. Wonderful.

Funny thing, Trevor, I spent until late last night listening to my unmodified system and appreciating all the qualities you mention. I just use bog standard Parisian electricity and the apartment doesn't have an earth.

I think the mood sometimes grabs you more some days than others - hadn't felt like listening to anything for several days before.

Paris?

Well don't you have a balanced Mains supply there, ie 110v on both the live and neutral wires?

You still will get the RF contamination, but given the limitations you have its good that you enjoy music as and when the mode takes you.

I'd swing by in a few weeks when we're passing, but i think i'd get told off by the other half!

Have to say given you're posts and the knowledge they display i'd love the chance to have a listen (and advice on my own).

Trevor i know where you're coming from tonight as just sat chilling out to my new pl00s listening to lionel richie and the commodores greatest hits - unusual choice for me but just moved off kanye west and loving every minute of it except for the awful diana ross colaboration that has just started levels all over the place!!

But wow it sounds amazing - these speaker really are a cut above anything else i have owned - poss a little polite for some tastes but just loving the detail and above all the music

i didn't know you from leeds sometimes thought i was the only northerner!!!! i'm from shipley so a stone throw away!!

Hi Trevor, sorry to butt in with a question but you know a lot more about mains etc than me and other forum members. I have a Cyrus PSX-R which is attached to the Pre-amp at the moment and it has improved the sound. My first question is that if the PSX-R is like a giant battery feeding regulated electricity to the pre-amp, is it then "clean" power?

My second question (sorry!) is where to start -- I already have the Tacima thingie but if I want to invest some £££, do I start with a decent mains conditioner to "filter/clean" the power before it gets to the standard kettle leads I use; or do I start with replacing the kettle leads with hi fi mains cable first??

The first route seems more more logical to me but what do you think? Many thanks!

Oh dear, what have I said. Its a great feeling trev when your completely satisfied with your own system having spent all that time & effort to achieve the sound u require.

Im the same with my home cinema set up as it sounds great !! & i challenge anyone not to be blown away by it, at my local hifi/home cinema store even the staff there say its one of the best in sound quality that theyve heard here in Grimsby (population 12)! ha.

Its probably also down to my rooms characteristics & so on.

Im not to far from leeds Trev, so you never know i may pop round for a demo & to see if all this mains attention really has paid of as im sure it certainly has mate.

Then i could do my own review for all the guys & gals on here....

OK 230v on a good day 220v is nearer to what you actually get.

But the French divide it down both rails NOT just the live rail!
Its balanced, that's why you dont need an Earth hence 2 pin plugs.

Morning, a dog lover to boot I see, we have a Louchen and 2 cats!

I had myself for many years a Cyrus PS6/PSX. (modified the PSX unit with really noticable improvements)
I have to start being a bit careful, some people are begining to think I might know what I'm talking about! For anyone who would like to ask me directly you can E Mail me on Trevor7979@aol.com to avoid hi jacking a thread.

1st point:- The PSX unit consists of a much larger transformer. (the larger the transformer the better job it does in suppling a more stable feed)

A better quality diode bridge. (still can be much better)

15,000uf x 2 per rail reservour caps giving much more energy reserves. (they really do need to be by passed to improve musical detail)

So whilst it brings improvements to voltage stability and smoothing plus giving more headroom to deal with load and transient demands of the music (Rhythm/timing) you still have a smeared sound which can be greatly improved both by a clean mains feed and internal mods.

2nd point:- If you have a really clean Mains supply, I am thinking of a dedicated shielded spur, solid Earth etc you will find little benefit in using something better than kettle leads!

Drop me a line and I can talk you through in much more detail, I have covered much on this in other posts.
I would try feeding your PSX unit off a 13A socket, not through the Tacima as they tend to strangle high current supplies. You will notice this when you are playing music on higher volumes where the sound will start to get thin/brittle before the onset of distortion. (which will occur at lower levels)

Trevor, what are you?? You are a Star!!

Thanks so much for the input, looks like I have quite a bit of reading to do - starting I think from your previous posts on this forum!

Have a great Easter weekend! PS. I would love to have a cat too but unfortunately both dogs are not cat-friendly!
