Can anybody tell me if the multi channel audio outputs on a blu ray player will give me some or all of the HD audio formats if I connect it to my 'fairly old' (i.e no HDMI input) Denon AV receiver?

Thanks Andrew. I was thinking of purchasing the Panasonic DMP BD30 and was hoping to enjoy both improved picture and sound! I take it I will hear a vast difference between that and my current digital (coax) connection?

Thanks John/Prof/Andrew

I guess the BD 50 is my best bet below £500 unless any others spring to mind! (Latest copy of What Hifi is at home in the lounge!)

Hi drw03,

it's also worth pointing out that the BD50 will shortly be replaced by the BD55. We have one in the building and will be testing it as part of our awards judging. The review will be out in our awards issue but it could be online even sooner. Watch this website...

Stupid question time! Having just read the review for the DMP-BD55 the tech spec states that its not compatible with DVD-Video. Does this refer to standard DVD's?!

professorhat:
That must be a typo since it mentions its DVD playback in the review - Mr. Everard, Mr. Clough!

All the BD player reviews say no to DVD Video but yes to DVD R and R/W. It is safe to say that the Pana plays and upscales normal dvds to 1080p.
