Muffled digital output?

Our main viewing TV is a Panasonic LED jobbie (an ET60 from memory) and its noise is enhanced by a Sonos Playbar. This is obviously fed to the Sonos' only input, the optical digital one, via the fibre supplied with the Playbar. What is happening, though, is that the sound is becoming increasingly muffled to the point where I can hardly make out what is being said on screen.

I've connected up a CD player to the Sonos using the same fibre and have done extended listening tests, all of which sound perfect, which brings me to the conclusion that the TV's sound output is to blame for the incoherence. The TV was bought from Richer Sounds with an extended warranty, but does anyone have any experience with their claims and repairs depts? I have every suspicion that my TV will be carted off for a number of weeks, only to be returned with the message that they can't find anything wrong with it!
