Ok thought i would share my attempt of putting together a light box for movie posters, i have collected them for a while now [ i know its sad ] and have looked into buying proper illuminated panels like in the cinema, but they are just silly money, so i sat down worked out the materials to use, lighting, frames, glass, and finish, and here is the finished job.

Unfortunatly my picture taking is not much cop, so does not do the poster justice, anyway here you go.

Here is the box not lit

And here is the lit version.

Total cost £57.00 not i thought.

That would be good, just wanted to see what interest there was, i am making another 3 soon so i will do a step by step, the good thing is it is really easy and 95% of the materials came from wickes. Just the the job

that looks good! Presume you've made an mdf or similar box and lit with flouroscent tubes? Or something else?

Hope you've left it open at the top to allow heat to escape! Is there any danger of burning your posters - I imagine over time they'll probably fade with that light on them?

Yes the box is vented at the top, as for the lighting they are 30w tubes which have plastic deflectors over the tubes them selves so heat is not an issue, the glass is 4mm thick so there is no problem with heat on the poster either, as these are genuine cinema posters they are made for display and are pretty robust, i see no point in keeping them in tubes may as well show them off.

The lighting themselves are linkable upto 8 tubes so wiring is very easy just plug each light then plug it in the socket, i would recomend anyone not sure should seek advice from a qaulified electician.

Superb way of showing (like you say) something which would normally spend it's life in a tube or curling up on a wall

You have reminded me of a job I had way back when which involved producing custom sized light boxes for museums, libraries and galleries. I am definitely going to follow suit on this idea - many thanks for sharing

Great stuff, good to hear you're not violating an original poster! Looking at buying a place in the next 6 months or so, so will consider one of these for the new, ultra home-cinema...

It looks very impressive Pioneer7 but £57.00 a lot of cash for a framed poster though & i'd find it'd most likely distract me when it's switched on.

Be cool having them on the outside of your house, ha
