I don't think they are screwed. There will be different versions of 4k and is very similar to when hd was launched, 720p, 1080i, 1080p 50hz and then 1080p 24hz and I've probably missed some...

My point is; there will be different versions of 4k and the pre 2015/16 TVs will be at a different standard because 'actual the standard' was only agreed in jan this year..
