Was given one of these last week. Sounds great, one or two jumps in the music but that could be the cds I am using. A quick question for anyone familiar with this player as there is very little on the net. It has a headphone socket, can the volume be controlled or do I need headphones with a volume control (I have no remote). Thanks

I am not too sure but think you need the remote to adjust volume. You should be able to download users manual somewhere online.

Thanks. The remote might turn up. I tried to get the manual before I posted here to no avail

Manual for 4,5 and 6 available here but only in Italian it would seem, which is odd because they are French :) Don't know if it can be translated.

Try to Google Micromega remote control to obtain one and see it has volume up/down buttons on it.

For what it's worth there appears to be a lot of talk on forums as to how unreliable these machine are. Best sell it on and buy something with a remote.

Thanks for the link.

My cousin gave it to me for nothing. I played it last night for about 3 hours. The sound quality off this machine is great. It jumped maybe twice on each disc for a second or so (the internet implies this is a common fault, so not ideal but will put up with for the nice sound and the fact it's a freebie) but I think it will go nicely in my bedroom

I couldn't sell it anyway, it's kind of faulty

Might be worth trying a cheap CD Lens Cleaner disc you never know. ;-)

Anyway, while I think about it..... headphones... surely your Marantz amp has a headphone socket.

I never thought of a lens cleaner. I will try and pick one up, it's a long time since I've seen one.

The marantz has a socket but I'll hopefully be pairing the CD up with a Pioneer a400 amp that I also got for free. It seems perfect except for a little static when adjusting volume. I'm sure that also has a headphone socket.

I was just curious about the headphone socket on the CD player as there wasn't a volume switch

The Pioneer does have socket. Presumably if CD has no physical knob then it must be controlled remote.

The transport mech is a Philips CDM12, as in many a legendary player back in the day. Unfortunately they are notorious for failing, which may be happening, but the good news is that new laser and lense assemblies are only about £15...

I wonder is this a difficult replacement or would I need to send it to a repair centre?

I think it is simple enough. Try this step-by-step web tutorial for the basics. This is on a Marantz CD46 which contains a similar mechansim. I think yours is a CDM 12.1 whereas the CD46 contains a later variant CDM 12.4... Note that Micromega will almost certainly have undertaken some modding of the transport, but the laser pick up assembly will be the same or very similar.
