Just been browsing on Meridian's website and ive fallen in love with there digital loudspeakers. used to own a meridian f80 and was blown away by the sound quality of a device that was so small but was a match for a seperates set-up of simular price. so is it a fair statement to say they are the rolls royce of british hi-fi?

oh well, just changed the title. just for you andrew

I think those who believe consider him to be omnipresent, so he's probably on my left, too, and in front and behind me...

Not if you're building aero-engines it's not. Still a world leader.

Oh, and it's Rolls-Royce. The hyphen is very important!

As to the original query, I think Quad and Linn would want some say in there. All great companies. Of the current or newer breed, Leema are turning out some superb products currently.

I don't think I'd personally agree with the title. I used to own a Meridian 800 series system (out at the same time as the 200 series, early 90's), and I think that was their high point. Meridian used to be way ahead of everyone else regarding anything digital (although competition in the form of Deltec popped up around this time too), but given that was 20 years ago, how far have Meridian progressed? There is better sounding hi-fi out there, whether it's diital or analogue. They have some nice features, but if the future was to be digital loudspeakers, it would have happened by now.

Yes I think calling Meridian the Rolls-Royce would cheer them up no end, they are probably Premiership standard but not Champions League, a Sunderland perhaps.

How very patronising.

I should think a pair of DSP8000s fed with a Sooloos would leave your system back in the dressing room, gasping ventolin and praying for mercy.

Nothing patronising at all Chebby, Rolls-Royce is the creme de la creme. Nothing wrong with being Premiership standard either, shows you are up there. There is only one Rolls-Royce though, the very best.

I have no doubt that system would sound pretty good either.

Sorry. Thought you were being the guy with the Mondeo saying how rubbish a Bentley is because it's not a Bugatti or the armchair football critic who thinks he could play better than some top class athlete just because they aren't in his favourite team.

Apology accepted mate, I know we don't always hear eye to eye

I think it would leave most systems like this!

I have yet to hear something better. (Although I do not have the experience of David who would have heard far more systems.)

This was one system that I was blown away by.

Andrew Everard:Why drive something like a Bentley when you can drive a Bentley? Why drive a Bentley when your chauffeur can drive it for you. Personally think Sugden would be up there.

A vehicle to represent Sugden?

(Sorry. The view of their factory inspired that image. Luckily I could not find a photo of the LOTSW bathtub on pram wheels or that would have been the first choice
