Marantz to Rega?

I've been looking to put around £1000 into an amplifier and speaker, after scouring the 5 star review indexes I came up with the CD/PM6004 Marantz & Q 2050i combination. This could come to around £900 now, which is pretty spot on budget wise, and I was impressed with sound in the demo albeit with the BX5 speakers. However, I'm now thinking on saving up another £400 more to go for the Rega Brio-R with DAC. I'm not in need of a CD player, and with the CD6004 what impressed me more was the price, suitability and USB function. I assume this would be very below the par set by DAC's however. It would be more tricky to get to the £1300+ or so needed and I wanted to ask of the difference in quality? I demo'd the Brio-R but it was accompanied by the B&W 685s, which sound great. I'm now thinking of how quick the CD/PM6004 combo would outdate in comparison to the Rega's? How big is the gap in quality? Thanks

Don't worry about that. There's much more gain to get from upgrade in speakers. Rather invest the £400 in speakers than in the dac. (based on experience)

i went from a PM/CD6004 combo with BX2 speakers to my current set up - definitely a step up from the Marantz albeit the Marantz is a good set up a little warm with presentation though!

Get the Rega you wont be dissapointed!

Go listen to it - its your ears that will decide!

Think you have to set a top line budget and stick with it.. There will always be more attractive options for more money.. If you do not have any cabling you will have to factor this in as well. Good DACs can be picked up on ebay for good prices now should the need arise. Single box solutions might provide a good option (cd player and amplifier combined and other functionality) allowing you to get a better set of speakers (worth investing in).

The rega is a great system but it looks to be beyond your budget.
