Looking to get the Marantz 6002 amp and cd player to use with some B+W 685 speakers (yes me again but a slightly different angle to this thread). 1. I currently have a Denon-1930 DVD/SA-CD player. Would using the Marantz cd player give significantly better sound quality than using my Denon, or am i just as well to save my money and stick with the 1930. 2. If it's worth me sticking with the Denon, then is the marantz amp still a good option considering i am saving myself some money and have a little extra to spend on the amp. Thanks in advance for any feedback and advise that can be given.

Would it sound better? Yes. Does it sound £200 better? That is something only you can decide.... but if someone gave me a gift voucher for Richer Sounds for £200.... i would buy the Marantz CD player every time because that is what i think i will be buying next time i have £200 to spend.

The Marantz will definitely sound better. Its a better CD spinner in the first place anyway, but its expounded by the fact that pairing the Denon with an even better amp than the 6002 would only highlight its deficiencies compared to the 6002 CD player. The Marantz duo will give you a good, well balanced system if the Marantz sound is your thing.

Hey Stevee,

I'm pretty much on exactely the same boat as you mate. I was first considering the B&W 686 to purchase, but the reviews and all the positive feed back for the 685's make the extra £100 asking price for the speakers worth it (even though it may just slightly be out of my budget!)

The amp and CD player combo I was considering to buy is also the marantz 6002.at first i had the rotel ra-05 amp in mind, but the fact that im spending the extra money on the speakers means i had to cut back on how much i can spend on the amp. i know as the source, the marantz cd player will work in harmony with the 685's, but im still questioning if the 45Watts/channel power of the marantz amp will be enough to sufficiently drive the speakers, what do you think?

cheers.

demo them. read in a review they put the b&w's with the marantz and they worked well, but theres only one way to find out. sure probably wont sound as good with as them with say £600 components. try to find somewhere with a good range of stuff maybe sevenoaks (theres loads of these scattered everywhere)? and demo with a range of speakers.

i'm using cd6002 together with exposure 2010s integrated and B&W602s3 , which i can say i'm very happy with it. during the demo they used 6002 cd&amp and i was impressed, but when i took cd6002 home and partner it with exposure i can say its sound better and more allrounder

The dedicated CD player will definitely sound better, but something to ponder, and would make me think next time I was upgrading...
When I upgraded my Arcam A80 amp to a Lyngdorf SDA I2715 I tried the A80 on my downstairs TV system (Denon M31, Budget Sony DVD player, and MS902 speakers.)
The sound from a £60 DVD player, using the A80 amp was streets ahead of the sound from the Denon Mini system(A 5 star highly regarded machine in its day). Now it isn't a great test, and I dont know the sound quality of your 1930, but if it were me, I would at least try a far more expensive amp with the DVD AND the 2 cheaper separates, to see if there was much in it...If you end up with the better amp it also gives you a really nice upgrade path.

I've also experienced this. I tried a CD player from a decent one-brand "seperates" system, and playback was not as good as the £50 Sony dvd I usually use.

Anyone else have opinions on whether the 6002 amp will sufficiently drive the speakers at only 45W per channel ?

I have the set-up you are looking at and I have no complaints.

The amp IMO has been rated on the conservative side and can drive the 685 extreamly well and with apprent ease.

I good set of interconnect will bring out the detail, I have used the Gotham cables but I found these to harsh - Amazing detail through, I am currently running with Atlas Equator II - a similar level of detail but a pleasent warmth to the sound.

FYI.

Speakers positioned quite close to the corners of the room which is approx 3m x 3m - mostly hard surfaces.
