Manufacturer Characteristics

Has anyone ever come accross a list of speaker manufacturers, (or made one themselves) and given them a 'rating' i, for example:

manufacturer A: Warm sounding

manufacturer B: Open and detailed sounding

etc.

I know that even within a manufacturer, there can be differences depending on model/range, but generally speaking , they would have a 'house' signature character/sound.

Similarly , the same for amplifiers etc?

I would guess such a list could be the starting point on someones journey in hifi, and help them determine, before a visit to a dealer, what they could ask to audition, and not just base it on specs sheets and appearance?

Of course, the opposite of that is that you might dismiss products that would have pleasantly surprise you..

Just curious.

There was just such a list here in the last couple of months. I think CnoEvil might have started it and others joined in. Regret I can't find it, but someone else will remember better than me!

It was from warm and smooth to bright and analytical, I think.

ATC speakers - congested, thick & distorted. not analitical and not smooth

AVI - crystal clear, smooth, pristine, organic, natural, accurate

No problem.

Remember that's a subjective assessment, so it's up to you to see if you're in agreement. *smile*
