However, chances are if you own a mobile phone or tablet, you've unknowingly been part of the coltan mining operations in the congo :( http://www.phonestory.org/#coltan

This is also true of any tantalum capacitor. (Probably found on almost any circuit board in almost any electrical item.)

Also, other major world suppliers of tantalum include Brazil, Australia and other African countries (even Canada). Who is to know where their 'bit' of this stuff was mined?

I have no issue with it, some of the stuff I have is made in china, itseems even the manufacturerers can feel uneasy about the far eastern association, especially 'audiophile'british makes for example my AE109 say boldly on the back'designed and engineered by acoustic energy, england, but they were made in malaysia!

Believe it or not that's not because of the UK customers - it's a far bigger stigma in China and the Far East than it is here! The latest products from AE (1-Series, 3-Series, Compact) are made in China and to a far higher standard than we could do in the UK, almost regardless of price. Our Chinese customers hate them saying "Made in China" on the back so they say "Made in PRC", (People's Republic of China) not that it makes a difference in reality but the subtle rewording seems to be enough to make it acceptable.

what about the raw materials, should it not be 'assembled in china' instead, arent many parts still made in japan anyway such as the semiconducters and capacitors and shipped over, so if it says made in china , it might not neseccarily be chinese made, even the metal covers,? but does it matter, of course not

Electronic Parts mostly Made in Japan

And radioactive too, if made in the north east of the country, ooops ..... only joking

Similarly, quite a lot of "Swiss Made" watches should actually read "some manner of final assembly, of Chinese, French and/or Japanese parts, somehow occurred in Switzerland".
