I've decided to try loading my speaker stands with sand or shot.  I also I have a pair of Ruark Templar speakers which can also be loaded with some sand/shot which is highly recommended to get the best out of them

Where can I buy suitable sand or lead shot?  I'd prefer shot as sand sounds like it might be a little messy.

Kiln dried sand is readily available from Wickes for a couple of quid a bag which is enough to fill ten stands. Shot would theoretically do the job better though I doubt will make enough audible difference for me to introduce any extra lead into my house.

I have loaded stands and speakers in the past and the effect is noticeable, but unless the quantity of sand is high the greater mass of the lead would be more efficacious.

I'm not too sure were you would source lead shot in large quantities, I remember checking the yellow pages and getting a good del on lead swarf.

It was more difficult to handle, but was a lot cheaper than the HiFi stuff you can buy.

I'm not really sure what Octopo means by 'introducing extra lead into my house'

This would imply he has enough already!?

The lead would be benign if within stands and is only 'toxic' when handled and consumed.

Just wear gloves when handling and if there is fine dust wear a mask ( lead dust hmmmm heavy)

I'd much prefer lead shot and I only need a few pounds, I'd also be careful not to eat any!

You could try going to your local scrap merchant. You can get new steal punchings that are only 2-3mm across so would be heavier than sand and cheaper than lead. Just a thought.

You could ask a few hi-fi dealers, as lead shot used to be stocked by some.

I did try to buy a tub of it about 10 years ago, but couldn't lift it to carry it out of the store!

Griffy, those are one of my all time favourite speakers! Why did you replace them with the ATCs? Do you have the Templar IIs? We have them at school along with an Arcam Alpha 9 system. One of Britain's great hi-fi secrets.

Thinking of putting the Templars with my valve amp and Project Genie deck, although the Templars sound awesome with my Arcam setup! ÿFantastic soundstage with the Templars and very musical.ÿ

As musical as it gets! I'm not sure how loud they would go with a valve amp (Which one do you have?) but they would sure sound fantastic!
