Hi, I've been out of the game for quite a while due to a new wife/2 kids and a large mortgage!

When I was young free and single I could splurge £3000 on a tv happily and what a great decision that was, I have loved every minute with my KURO! Now though the landscape has changed and a 50in tv will have to fit into a tight budget so is it possible for me to actually improve on the KURO at a fraction of the price? All suggestions welcome as I'm going to compile a shortlist for demoing. (If that's even a word!)

What's your budget? Do you want a 1080p TV or are you looking for 4K?

Check this one:

Hi bigboss, the budget would be £800-£1000. would like it to be somewhat future-proofed, not sure if that's realistic but that's what I'd prefer. I do have a surround setup so the sound quality does not matter, it would be mainly for movies and sport, not sure what screen I'd prefer as I've only ever had plasma so will need to demo the various technologies.

best tv for the price which is "future proof" to a degree is samsung ue48js8500. seen it for £1000, not sure if any places have it in stock i would assume so. have a look at that. very good tv

Yes, not necessarily a Kuro beater though. But the quality is very good.

if that tv isnt a kuro beater no tv is under £1000 unless you get one second hand

Probably not.

As Series1Boy hints at, there were various generations and series of Kuro, some better than others as I should know, owning two.

I'm also not quite clear in which respects you want a new television to improve on your Kuro - there's certainly more to life than a "Smart" TV platform for instance.

i had the opertunity to watch guardians of the Galaxy on a kpr-510a and a 48js9000 at the same time. The JS9000 did best the kuro in pretty much all areas, as we couldn't get the room pitch black the black luminance was equal but the white luminance was off the charts better on the JS. Colour was subjectively richer (in a good way, not an exaggerated way) on the the JS too. If you do watch in pitch black environments the kuro will obviously win in the blacks but not by as much as you would think, a desk lamp or light leak from curtains is enough to end the advantage.

Although overall the JS was better, I wouldn't bother changing if you are staying in the same size category. A 50" kuro to a 65 suhd would be a significant upgrade. A 50" kuro to a 48 or 55" is probably not worth it.

if you don't have a 510a then the benefits of the JS would probably be larger.

By "various" you mean two - LED-lit LCD and OLED.

I've not heard of a Kuro KRP-510A - surely you mean 500A?

I completely agree! *acute*

Hi Series1boy, it's the LX508D so not the last gen that were made but still a lovely screen. Every friend or families house we go to even the missus says when we leave "were'nt the picture terrible on their tv!" That's why I thought I'd ask on here to get an expert opinion because it's not about being a smart tv it's purely on picture quality.

Hi steve I also have the lx508d ,have you tweaked your tv at all I/e the voltages,or had your screen calibrated.david

Hi David, I did think about calibration a couple of years ago but was convinced that it would'nt be worth it on such an old telly as I'd probably be replacing it soon so would'nt really be cost effective.

Hi steve I had my set calibrated ,you be surprised how good it gets ,I had a good pal do mine ,I used to watch the TVs on optimum mode thinking it can't get any better, but after calibration that setting was not watchable it looks awful in compared to a calibrated screen,it brought life to the old girl lol .after some help from guys on another forum I tweaked my voltages which also brought about improvements to the p/q ,my old girl not given up the ghost yet lol.

I had an LX508d, and swapped it 3 years ago (maybe more) for a GT50, and there's rarely a day that goes by that I don't regret it. Yes, you can improve on certain aspects of the picture quality with a modern tv, but the LX was so well made, and oozed class.

I would consider doing what someone else said, tweak the voltage and get it calibrated, and then a few years time, move onto a 4K OLED when the prices come down, and the quality goes up.

For the money you want to pay, then there is no TV to improve on your flagship albeit dated Kuro. There won't be a tv that can match the black levels unless you purchase a second hand Panasonic GT, VT plasma, then you would be still purchasing old tech and running a risk of the reliability issues.

the only Kuro beater is oled in terms of black levels and colour quality, but this is out of your current price bracket. You could however, purchase 1 of the latest 4K lcd TVs from Samsung(nugget can vouch for this) or Sony(son of sj can vouch for this) and again, they cannot match the deep inky blacks that your Kuro can produce.

so if you could stretch your budget to an oled, then do this. If not, stick with your Kuro until prices drop.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like calibration will be the way to go then, never heard of the voltages thing though! (I'm sure the interweb can show me the way haha!)
Which calibrator are you going to use? Where abouts do you live?
