Hi everyone - my first post here.
I enjoyed reading the speaker group test in the latest issue of WHF. Was great to see such an interesting selection of speakers in the price-band, and particularly reading a UK review of the Klipsch RB-81's. Anyone else using them - or other high-efficiency horn-loaded designs?
I've had a pair for a few months now and think the WHF review was very accurate (at least, my ears hear what the review panel heard). They are "fun" speakers, and while I'm not a D&B /dance fan they do inject some welcome bounce to the presentation of my music. The treble is very uncoloured for a horn-loaded tweeter IMO, and the punch, timing and soundstaging is superb. I do think they are about £100 overpriced though (I got mine for £390, but not sure if I'm allowed to say where?).
However, I was surprised that no mention was made of their very high efficiency, especially given how rarely one comes across 97dbs sensitivity standmount speakers*. I know WHF doesn't bombard readers with technical jargon to the same extent as other hi-fi magazines (each style has its merits and demerits of course), but in the context of the growing popularity of micro-systems/iPod docks,
tripath amps and the valve renaissance in might have been useful to point this out.
* measured performance is a little below the manufacturers rating though
