kitchen / diner LCD for near and far...

Hi all

Another dilema. Our kitchen / diner is nearing completion and we've allowed a space on the wall above the breakfast bar for a small ish LCD.

It'll be on a swivel bracket and will be used:

1. When cooking etc - not seriously watched but on in the background. Viewing distance 1 -2 m.

2. When sitting at the breakfast bar having a wee snack, cup of tea in the morning etc. Viewing distance well under 1 m...

3. 'proper' watching - sitting on a sofa across the room - viewing distance about 3 - 3.5 m.

What would be the best solution? We don't want to be struggling to see a small set from the sofa but don't want to be blinded when sitting at the breakfast bar...

You advice most welcome and appreciated!

Roger

1m is very close to an HD television (presumably) which is upscaling SD content - perceived picture quality will be poor. You may be able to live with this.

That being said, sounds like a 20"-23" would suit you. Can recommend the Sharp LX20(?) which was on at £250 from Richer.

We did a round up of @20in TVs lately, and the Sony KDL-20B4050 (review here) came out top. We tested it at £350 but i've seen it for under £300. It's got a superb Freeview tuner and unlike many small sets does not distort the picture ratio.

Thanks Clare

I'll certainly consider that one as you can't go too wrong with Sony. My only reservations are :

1. Whether it's a little too small..

2. It's really ugly and dated looking. If it had the sleek black look of the LGs or Samsung it would be a winner...

Yes - that at least looks better... I know it's picture quality that counts but it's not the main TV and it's one of the first things you'll see when you enter the room so has to look cool!

Ah - no Freeview tuner so that's no good after all!
