Hi

I'm looking to start upgrading my now pretty old and relatively inexpensive hifi starting with main speakers. They will be used as part of a 5.1 system for tv and films and as stand alone main speakers for music (mostly classical but some rock, jazz and pop).

The two I'm torn between are a pair of Kef Q100 bookshelf speakers, usually £400 now available for £220 and a pair of Tannoy DC4T floor standing speakers for £200. They have a claimed rrp of £649 so this seems like an incredible deal.

I can't compare them head to head unless I buy both so any opinions or advice would be great.

the tannoys seem like a real bargain at that price. Definitely worth a gamble.

You can get the DC6T's for £249 - bigger speakers with more bass, to me that sounds like the better deal - I demoed them at home a few years back when they were retailing at £800. And if you can stretch further - the DC6T SE's are £499 from a RRP of £1000 a year ago.

amp is Yamaha DSP-AX620, centre speaker is Eltax Symphony, rears are Eltax Symphony at moment but will replace with the Tangent Evo4's I'm currently using as front speakers and I'll probably look to upgrade the centre speaker soon as well. I also have a Yamaha YST-FSW050 sub but I really only use this for films. For music I just use the front speakers in stereo.

I'm mostly running music from laptop (HP Envy) or through playststion4 as my Marantz CD player died and is yet to be replaced.

My living room is 14'x12' approx

I have already ordered the Kef Q100's with Soundstyle Zsii stands at a total cost of £310. I then found the link for the Tannoy DC4T's and thought they might be a better deal, especially at only £200. It's not too late to return the Kefs and stands, I haven't even opened the boxes yet just in case....

Hummm...???

Price is irrelevant. If you're buying on price, you can buy any old tosh.

The main difference - other than personal preference - is that the KEFs have a wider dispersion compared to many other speaker brands, whereas the Tannoys are more focused. Choose your poison.

I'd be interested in the link for the DC6T's at £250. I did a search and they're all around the £500 mark. There is a used pair available through Amazon for £350 and a couple on ebay for £350 (both used).

SE's are also coming up around £500.

Try the richer sounds website - on offer at £249.95

As someone who has owned both (Kef Q500, LS50 and Tannoy Precision 6.2) I can back up what others say. Both brands are very good at creating a "sound stage" - which means sounds seem to project out into the room and don't obviously seem to come from the speakers themselves. The first time you hear good soundstaging, you think "wow".

Don't pay full RRP for anything. There are always discounts to be had, look for ex-display or end of line bargains. Richer Sounds and Sevenoaks are good places to start, eBay too.

My 6.2s were picked up yesterday from Richer with £1000 knocked off the price.

Tannoy dual concentric throws out a huge soundstage, with pinpoint imaging. Focused, but reaches wide. Not a narrow sound at all.

Got a pair of these floorstanders and I totally agree, the soundstage it throws is very good. I paid 200 quid for them in the nicer oak finish and whether they were £649 at any time is not the point for me

Purchased a pair of the Tonnoy DC4T's in light oak and a pair of the KefQ100's. I didn't like the look of th Kef speakers and I wasn't very impressed with the sound either.

The Tannoy speakers look and sound perfect. They are crisp, clear, mid and treble are well defined, bass is not overbearing and is nice and tight sounding. They're an excellent pair of speakers.

The Kef's are already in he possession of a courier on the way back to the supplier. The Tannoy speakers have a new home.
