Have just bought the Alumni from Richer Sound. Went in for the Q Accoustic 1010i 5.1 but they were just a little to big and a little less pretty than I had hoped.

I was shown a white set of Alumnis which are perfect from a size and looks point of view and the stands they do are spot on as well.

Having got home and read up a bit, What Hi Fi give them 4 stars and the KEF 2005.3 get 5 stars.

Now, Given that the look of the Alumni is spot on, how much better are the KEF's? Both are the same money.

I will run off my old amp for now so if pairin the Alumni with a certain type of amp will help i can do that later.

So, How much better are the KEF's or is it a close call and I should keep the Alumnis as they suit the room better?

I will watch mostley TV & Movies.

If anyone has either of these packages, I would value your opinion, as I would the WHat Hi Fi team!

What does it matter what anyone else thinks? If the Alumnis speakers do it for you, then they're right for you. The criteria for buying any product is different for everyone - it's a balance between performance, price and looks, and clearly, for you, the looks are a priority, perhaps even at the expense of a marginal gain in performance. Some may attach more importance to looks, others may see performance as more important than looks, and for others, cost is the over-riding factor. The real question here isn't what others may think, but whether the product meets your own personal criteria (a compromise between looks, price, and performance), and you feel entirely happy with your purchase.

I agree with wireman, if you are happy with speakers, then don not worry that they got 4* review.

4* is still very good remember, I have the Kef 2005.2 speakers which got a 5* in the first couple of reviews in this mag, then they got a 4 after years of newer speakers coming, and I'm still very happy with them

if your happy dont worry

Thanks for the replies.

I am one of those people who knows if something sounds good, but could not tell you why. I have noe set the Alumni up yet as need to buy other stuff (stands, cable etc).

Im sure they will be fine, but, if I can get something better, then why not?

Looks are important, but not if the product is rubbish, or, a lot worse then the next best thing.

Mind you, the review here of the KEF's still had a few down sides. I have got 14 days so I should get the cable and amp and test them properly!

Nice to hear from people who actually have either of these speakers....

My old system was a real mish mash. JBL centre, Tannoy M2 fronts, Yamaha NS10 rear and no sub! (all for sale buy the way)

So i guess having any sub at all will make a difference even if the M2's were quite beefy for Movies.
